Intriguing Read

Steve Rhode's years of study of Human Design have resulted in a much freer, less dogmatic viewpoint of this knowledge. A great clear read that doesn't beat about the bush but also does not try to tell anyone what to do or think or believe. I also love the Gene Keys book by Richard Rudd, both authors have taken Human Design as their starting point or platform and brought fresh insight and depth to it but in quite different ways. Keys are just that, they are the door openers, the rest of it is up to us.

I enjoyed this book, and it left me with some unanswered questions...

For me, this was a very readable book- in fact i finished it in 1 day (not common for me), on the computer screen, with English not being my native tongue. I also like the writing- it is fluent and direct. It feels like the author is here to be honest and motivate the reader to really use the knowledge for what it was intended - to let go into the flow of life, and be ourselves.

As someone who studies Human design for 3.5 years now, i came to this book VERY curious to see what's Steve's take on Strategy & Authority, Human Design's primary tool and focus. What i gathered from the book is that Strategy is still "in the game", with the types getting different names by Mr. Rohdes. As for Authority, it was left out of Bhan Tugh, and there is no explanation in the book as to WHY.
As my authority in Human Design is Emotional, i will have to "wait my wave" as they say, and come back to you (to me) if that is good or bad.... ;-)

For now, i feel my understanding of HD and its purpose and place in the big picture have gained depth from the reading of this book, and i am waiting to see what next life will bring me in my process...

Steve Rhodes learned directly from Ra Uru Hu. This is a pleasant addition to learning from The International School of Human Design (although they do not endorse Baan Tu). Baan Tu teaches from the "Bottom" up to the Bodygraph. And The ISofHD teaches from the Bodygraph down to the "Bottom". The reader can utilize this system much quicker the way it is presented to the reader. Therefore it is very helpful in day to day usefulness of "Living your design".

Great and compact

The great void of high-quality field guides for South America is gradually shrinking. This book is undoubtedly most useful way beyond the boundaries of Chile. I wish I had had this book for my trip to southern Peru in 2000. The attempt to identify yellow-finches with the only field guide I had for that area (de la Pe�a and Rumboll) was an exercise in sheer frustration. The new book shows clear differences between the species. I can't judge the accuracy for most species, but this is a book that gives you confidence that the author and the illustrators got the vast majority right. As had been mentioned in earlier reviews, the quality of the plates is a bit variable, but they all seem at least usable, and the majority is downright excellent. The many flight pictures are particularly welcome. Sexual differences and even some geographical variations are clearly depicted as well. What a fine and compact guide book! And it is so affordable (at least here at Amazon!)that any traveller could really take a second copy along for local birders, as had been suggested.

Catherine�M. Pittman, PhD, is associate professor at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN. Helpful Strategies

If you are looking for a book that is just going to provide strategies for how to overcome anxiety, this is probably not the book for you. However, if you are interested in both the neuroscience behind stress and anxiety and learning techniques to cope with those responses, then this is an excellent volume to read. Personally, I agree with the authors that it is often easier to overcome stress when you actually know and understand what is happening to your brain, and how it can manifest itself in physical ways. And while this book is very detailed, I think the authors did a good job of keeping everything easy to understand.

Numerous types of stress are discussed in this book, including the reasons that these types of stress occur and what parts of the brain are responsible for your response. If you’re anything like me, you are constantly trying to make logical sense out of your worry, but I learned from this book that there may not always be a logical reason behind your anxiety. In fact, you may not ever really know why you certain situations, thoughts, sounds, smells, etc., can trigger an episode of panic. The good news is that you don’t have to know. The authors go into great detail to describe techniques that you can use to essentially “rewire” your brain to avoid having stress responses. The book mainly discusses the two different parts of the brain that deal with fear and stress, the amygdala and the cortex. The amygdala is basically your body’s natural fear response system. Your amygdala often works without your ever knowing it, such as when you are driving and instinctively swerve out of the way to avoid hitting another car. The cortex, on the other hand, deals with worry and obsessive thoughts. For example, your cortex is to blame when you are constantly worrying about a possible outcome that will likely not occur. You may have one or both of these types of stress, and the authors provide useful “exercises” that can be used to deal with both of these types of stress.

If you’re reading this review, I’m guessing that you probably don’t care about all of these details though, right? What you really want to know is if the methods in this book really work. I think they could certainly help many individuals who suffer from stress and anxiety. These authors give insightful strategies to help with different types of stress responses, all of which are based on years of research. Your stress isn’t going to go away overnight having read this book, but it certainly may help you learn to cope with your anxiety when it does occur.

Accessible Book for Understanding Anxiety

This is a very useful and informative book. The book is pitched to well-read, intelligent laypeople and explains the neurobiology and the underlying research in a clear, concise and comprehendible fashion. After reading this book, the reader will understand the mechanisms of anxiety very well.

Dr. Pittman and Ms. Karle cover treatments, which the typical anxious person can do on his own, and more in depth treatments which require professional help. The authors are very clear about when someone suffering from anxiety should seek assistance from professionals.

I would recommend this book to anyone curious about anxiety and how to deal and treat it. This is very well written and accessible and not intimidating at all. A very good read!

I have had anxiety in the past and got this book from the library in order to help my teenage daughter. It is so good that I am ordering my own copy. The workings of the brain while anxious are explained clearly. Understanding what's going on is half the battle! Excellent explanations of how different strategies can rewire your brain follow. If you have any experience with anxiety and want to understand it better or help some one else, this book is a MUST HAVE!

A very readable textbook

I assigned this fine book in a class for the first time this semester (Fall, 2014), and it has worked quite well. The authors are especially good at explaining complex theoretical orientations in the field of media studies. It's accessible and engaging, and not at all simplistic. I would recommend this textbook to others who teach communication theory, cultural studies, media criticism, etc.

About the Author
W. Mark Saltzman is the Goizueta Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Yale University, and was the founding Chair of the Yale Department of Biomedical Engineering. He has taught numerous courses on topics in biomedical engineering over the last three decades, and has been widely recognised for his excellence in research and teaching. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society. He is also the recipient of the 2014 Mines Medal and has been elected to the Institute of Medicine.

This is really an outstanding book! Although there are a few books available on cryogenics, there is nothing like Frank Kerry's "Industrial Gas handbook" for both completeness and depth of coverage of pretty much everything related to ASU (oxygen -- nitrogen -- argon) plants and the Industrial Gas business. Engineers and really anyone interested in industrial gas -- ASU plants will appreciate the efforts Frank Kerry made to assemble all of this useful and complete information in the Handbook.

This is really an outstanding book (and I read it from cover to cover after it arrived from Amazon); Frank Kerry has assembled a collection of information on a subject that is essential to the functioning of so many components of modern society.

I congratulate Frank for his excellent work and for taking the time to document it so thoroughly and with such a natural balance of hard earned knowledge, essential theory and history. If you need or perhaps just want, to understand the processes around the separation, storage and transport of gases (particularly the atmospherics) then this is the book for you. I bought the book for a particular reason and found (along with the information I sought) an absolute wealth of insights that led to other related ideas.

It is my belief that books of this nature, concerning vital, fundamental techniques are as important to our survival and growth as a species, as are the efforts to conserve and improve biodiversity.

Highly recommended!!!
