About the Author

Igor Zhirkov is teaching his highly successful “System Programming Languages” course in ITMO University in Saint-Petersburg, six-time winner of the ACM-ICPC Intercollegiate World Programming Championship. He studied in Saint Petersburg Academic University and received his Master Degree from ITMO University. Currently he is doing research in verified C refactorings as part of his PhD thesis and formalization of Bulk Synchronous Parallelism library in C at IMT Atlantique in Nantes, France. His main interests are low-level programming, programming language theory and type theory.

Colorful characters, vivid detail, and a whole range of emotion await the reader that embarks on a journey through Louise Erdrichs' 1985 book Love Medicine. Those who have no prior knowledge of life on an Indian Reservation will come away with a better understanding of Native American life in the twentieth century, while those who are familiar with life on "the res" will certainly find many things to relate to. Erdrich has managed to weave what may at first seem to be unrelated chapters into a colorful history of the lives of the Kashpaw and Nanapush families spanning five decades. Intertwined in the story are many other reservation residents all of whom add their unique contribution to this literary tapestry.
Each chapter is written in the style of its' primary character and reflects the individuals' point of view. Family alliances and feuds are played out, relationships become evident, and secrets are uncovered with each turn of a page. Events are often retold elsewhere in the book from another persons' perspective and the plots continue to thicken. Hopes and dreams often give way to stark reality. Some characters remain on the reservation accepting their lots in life and triumph despite personal tragedies, dysfunctional families, and adversity. Other characters don't cope as well and attempt to escape to the city only to find out that no matter where they go they cannot escape themselves or their destinies. Then, there are those that are so tortured by their life experiences that they see no other way out but the ultimate escape from life itself. Yet, despite tragedy and hardship, life endures. Each character has unique coping mechanisms and skills, and philosophy about life. As the book progresses the reader gets to know all the key characters very well.
Remarkable throughout the book is the connection and sense of extended family that exists in this community. Especially poignant is the way the matriarchs hold all aspects of reservation life together through good times and bad. Children are fostered as needed without question and raised alongside natural children, frailties accepted, those in need are cared for, eccentricities are tolerated, and indiscretions either forgiven or ignored. Doors are always open to friends and relatives, commodities shared, and family loyalty is a way of life. The community is interdependent on all its' members, as is clearly demonstrated when all the families in the community are included as employees of the short-lived Tomahawk Factory, and reap from both the success and failure of this trailblazing endeavor. The ways and superstitions of the Old World weave their way throughout the book adding interest, and sometimes mystery.
Using the personal experiences as a German-Native American and her keen insight into all aspects of life Erdrich brings to light the challenges of everyday life for this marginal population; those that live both in the old world and the new, and sometimes don't fit into either. With her skill at presenting a total picture of modern Native American lifestyle on the reservation the author brings to the readers' consciousness various socio-political messages. The presence of alcohol abuse and its' consequences resurfaces throughout the book both from the abusers' point of view and that of the victims. After an intimate look inside the lives of these fictional characters the root causes of what are often looked upon as hereditary traits become apparent. People need to feel valued, productive, and that there is hope for something better in their lives. Historically, reservation life has encouraged dependency on the government rather than self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship. The effects of parental alcoholism on children in the form of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome also cannot be ignored as a cause of this unfortunate cycle that clearly needs to be broken.
Come, spend some time at the "res", and if you aren't ready to leave when you turn the last page don't despair - this need not be the end. Step into the books' sequel The Bingo Palace. One can only wonder and imagine what further adventures and mysteries await within the walls what used to be the infamous Tomahawk Factory!

A powerful, important book.

This is a book that, taken seriously, can be a life changer. It is ambitious in scale and in content, and, while it is difficult to internalize in one reading, it is worthwhile for anyone wanting to improve their life in ways that are meaningful. I consider it on par with titles such as "How to Win Friends and Influence People," and "Think and Grow Rich," which is no small compliment. Highly recommended.

You've done it again, Mr. Maltz.

One of the first copies of Maxwell Maltz's book, Psycho-Cybernetics is still, to this day, on my bookshelf.

In 1961, It did much more than just put me on my quest for self-improvement. For the very first time, someone connected the mind to the body and brought home the old, simple adage ... "Change your Mind and you change your life!"

That was Psycho-Cybernetics. That was the principle of Self Image Psychology ... proven and verified by science itself as an irresistible and powerful no nonsense psychology of happiness and fulfillment.

From there on ... for decades ... everything else that was printed in the Self Help Industry became supporting commentary for the principles in this book.

An now ... the new "enhanced" version of Psycho-Cybernetics just arrived. And Yesssss!!! I enjoyed this one as much as the original. If not more so!

Comparing the two, the new authors kept the voice and the insights of the original text intact, integrating only the updates needed for new generations to come to experience and cherish the joy of reading this old, new classic for the first time. And experience it, you will. You cannot do otherwise.

I've come across and read a lot from people like Jack Canfield

I've been on a self-help reading kick for about the past year. Between issues in my finances, health, relationships, career, I was being weighed down by it all. I've come across and read a lot from people like Jack Canfield, Joel Osteen, Law of Attraction - Teachings of Abraham, etc. They were all good, uplifting and helpful works in their own right, but something was missing. I was listening to a podcast and the host mentioned this book, which was something I've never heard about - ever or anywhere. I looked it up on Amazon and decided to order it. I am sure glad I did. For me, it brought all of the other ideas, concepts and practices together. Things like affirmations, burning desires, faith, action - they all are great, as long as they're operating in conjunction with the way you see yourself and want to see yourself. This book really stresses the importance of focusing on your self-image, which is something I've found many of the other works glossed over or lacked. It's a good work, laced with some biblical references which aren't overwhelming. If you can spend the money on it, it is certainly a great addition to your library. I've recommended it to everyone.

I'm nostalgic for this 90's tribute to 70's and 80's nostalgia

In the early 90's Lucasfilm was looking to revive the Star Wars franchise and this book played an integral part. Star Wars collectibles were few and far between, and finding people who actually cared about them seemed to be even more This book reminded people of just how much a powerhouse the franchise was at a time when it had mostly faded from the public eye, and for me personally, re-sparked an interest in something I only had fond memories of as a kid.

Looking back, it's a no-brainer as to why this book helped make Steve Sansweet the Star Wars guru he is today. Plus, it's still a great read on its own.

When I was a child, I used to be a collector of the Star Wars action figures and even owned several vehicles. "Star Wars" was not just a film but it was part of my childhood. May it be the toys, the comic books and it was one of the few times I can remember going to watch a movie with my parents (a movie that I actually enjoyed with them).

As I got older, I have managed to collect several lines of the Star Wars universe and for many collectors, they have looked to hardcore Star Wars merchandise collector Stephen J. Sansweet for his wonderful book with the "Star Wars Action Figure Archive".

But Sansweet hit a homerun with his Star Wars coffee table book with "STAR WARS: FROM CONCEPT TO SCREEN TO COLLECTIBLE" featuring an well-written and informative book covering the Star Wars trilogy. From it's original concept, it's artwork to the plans of creating the vehicles and how the popular films eventually led to a comic book series and also one of the most popular toy lines in the world.

According to Sansweet, the book came from nearly 40 hours of taped interviews with two dozen people who worked for Lucas film, Industrial Light & Magic, Kenner Products and 20th Century Fox Film.

The interviews were also backed up with extensive research through files and archives at Skywalker Ranch includin the photo library and prop archives.

What I enjoyed about this book is the many pictures showing the various merchandise including cereal, yogurt and popsicle boxes to International posters, shoes, socks, backpacks, skates, watches, you name it...there is so much featured in this book that as a Star Wars fan, you can't help but not be happy to own such an informative and well-written book.

For those who are wondering if this book features a lot of conceptual art and if it would benefit the artists who enjoy the Star Wars universe, I will say that there are plenty of conceptual books available that focus primarily on the art. This book is more or less a smorgasbord of information and pictures and focuses on many areas of the idea and creation of Star Wars but also in the merchandise/collectability standpoint.

This book is excellent! You can't go wrong with it because it's so fully of information and photography. Sansweet went all out in doing extensive research for the book and getting access to photography that just makes this book, one of the must-own books for "Star Wars" fans.

With so many "Star Wars" related books in the market, this is one of the must-own ones. Also, you can find it online for a great price these days! Definitely recommended!

Andrew “bunnie” Huang is a hacker, maker, and open hardware activist. He holds a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from MIT, is the author of Hacking the Xbox (No Starch Press) and The Essential Guide to Electronics in Shenzhen, and has served as a technical advisor for various hardware startups and MAKE Magazine.
