There are a lot of questions to be answered: Is Netta really dead? If not, why, and where is she now? And how come Corridan is always one step ahead of Harmas?

My First Chase

This is my first James Hadley Chase read and so I am not in a place where I can determine if this was one of his better or poorer efforts.
I enjoyed this book in much the same way that I enjoy some Turner Movie Classics. I don't watch them to witness great acting or incredible story lines but to remove myself from this current time and my place within it.
Indeed, as I read this book, I could not help but hear Humphrey Bogart delivering the protagonist's lines in Sam Spade fashion. And so, just like those old movies, this book provided the same warm, engaging feelings.
I plan on reading another Chase book in the near future.

A Top-Notch Thriller Set In Post-War London

Back in 1947 when Chase wrote this hardboiled thriller, the war had just ended and many protagonists in novels were returning war veterans, trying to make a life in the world they barely remembered. For the narrator of this novel, a reporter, who had spent several years as a war correspondent in London before the front moved on to France, he fondly remembers his war years in London. Back in the states, he remembers his long-lasting romance with a dancehall hostess and, when he wins it big at the track, he returns to London and seeks her out. But, alas, it turns out she had just committed suicide the day before, sticking her head in the oven with the windows all sealed and the gas full blast. The suicide doesn't make sense and we have a reporter investigating, sometimes alongside Scotland Yard, sometimes in spite of Scotland Yard and the story that follows is a terrific thriller of the kind one can expect from Chase. Between blonde bimbos and gangsters and thieves and muggers and the like, it is one great read that is hard to put down. This is a great read and makes one anxious to try another Hadley novel.

AND I HAD ALL OF HIS 90 BOOKS THAT HE WROTE FROM 1939 'TIL 1982 WHEN HE DIED, EXCEPT FOR" NO BUSINESS OF MINE", WHICH COMPLETES MY COLLECTION !!!!
AND IT WAS AS GOOD AS ALL OF THE OTHER 89 !!!!

An 80s Bodyreading Classic .... But Now a Bit Dated

This book, along with Dychtwald's Bodymind, was a mainstay back in the 80s for learning and teaching about reading the body and how the body expresses psychological patterns. However, it has become a bit dated. A more up to date book (2nd edition just released) that also takes a more broad based and in depth approach to exploring the bodymind connection is The Psychology of the Body by Elliot Greene and Barbara Goodrich-Dunn .... an essential book for those who work with the body, e.g., massage therapists, bodyworkers, physical therapists, somatic educators, etc. It doesn't delve into body reading as much, but goes into much more depth about the interconnection of the mind and body, how touch affects the bodymind, emotional release, and ethics from a body based point of view. In this sense, it is much more comprehensive and complements Body Reveals for those who want to know more about this subject.

great book, but a little vague

This is a very old book, and it really has great information. In the reprinting or updating, the authors would do us all a great service by getting more specific. In the images, I often can't easily "see" the lines or details of what the authors are describing. It would be nice to include arrows or just get more clear with their verbal descriptions of the patterns they are pointing out in a physical body.

About the Author
CHARLES R. BROOKS is Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Alumni Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee. He has received several teaching awards, including the M.E. Brooks Distinguished Faculty Award of the College of Engineering and the Albert Easton White Teaching Award from ASM International. He is also a Fellow of ASM International.

ASHOK CHOUDHURY is Commercialization Manager for the Office of Technology Transfer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He is the recipient of several teaching awards and technology transfer awards, and a co-recipient of an R&D 100 Award.

Humbling

I have been a forensic engineer for a good many years and I'm now on the Board of the American College of Forensic Engineering and Technology. That said, I have also prided myself in my knowledge of the mechanics of materials, failure analysis, properties, etc., but this incredible reference book has indeed brought me to my knees; it is, as the title of this review indicates, humbling to the very people that think they know more than the average bear, me included. This is a true in-depth treatise of the field of engineering materials science, replete with many photos, graphs, and illustrations. Dollar for dollar, gram for gram, this is the best reference of its type on the market. If you are a forensic engineer, even if your particular expertise is not in material analysis and/or failure issues, you would do well to have this reference on your bookshelf; I guarantee it.

Perfect for Professional Engineers

This book is exactly what I was looking for: application based failure analysis supplemented with theory and case studies. The book is very well written AND concise. The book contains the perfect amount of theory for practicing engineers, and countless related examples. This is not a course textbook laden with derivations and complex math. The authors wrote a perfect book for professional engineers involved with material failure analysis. Not to mention many pictures of failure surfaces with clear explanation of what the picture is showing. This is a book I will keep close for frequent referencing.
