I Understand Why...

I certainly understand why this edition of the Zohar catches its share of harshly critical wind, when compared to the Pritzker edition, notably because of the (sometimes annoying) manner in which they weave commentary right in there with the text, instead of presenting it separately...so if you wish to read the text without commentary, you have to constantly struggle (with your eyes, literally) to skip over the intrusive commentary and continue reading the actual text. Also, some people are offended by the Kabbalah Center's "new age" approach to the material. So the question becomes: if you already own the Kabbalah Center books, should you spend the money (which would be A LOT of money) to replace it with the Pritzker books? My answer to this question (believe it or not) is......NO. Recently, I made a page-by-page comparison of the two translations; and while the Pritzker translation may be a bit more clearly presented, really...the Kabbalah Center translation, by comparison, isn't so bad at all! You just have to take your time a little and approach it with patience & care. Sometimes, believe it or not, the intrusive commentary can actually be interesting and helpful! Also, I give the Kabbalah Center respect for being the "first ever" unabridged translation, which certainly makes it superior to the abridged 5-volume Soncino books. Also, I have to admit...I kind of LIKE the new-age approach...if you take it with gigantic grains of salt. So the bottom line is: if you already own the Kabbalah Center books, my advice is: no need to spend allll that money on the Pritzker books. This Kabbalah Center edition of the Zohar is JUST FINE. Be happy with it. Thank you & shalom.

Far inferior to the Pritzker Edition.

In writing a paper on the Qabbalah before the issuance of "The Zohar: Pritzker Edition" by Stanford University Press, I used this edition for my research. This edition is put out by "The Kabbalah Center", which is a fine organization for those who mind neither loose scholasticism in their learning about the Qabbalah nor the blending of New Age concepts therein, but for those who wish to learn of Sepher HaZohar through the purity of itself without the invasion of New Age ideas having nothing to do with traditional Qabbalah, then avoid the Kabbalah Center and this translation of The Zohar like the plague.
Aside from this, I did not like how this translation inserted interpretations into the main body of the text, rather than in foot-notes, as does the Pritzker Edition.

I rooted for this couple

I didn't buy this title when it first came out, the reviews weren't plentiful and most of them spoke of the female lead being weak; real sick of female doormats personally. When the story came around again I decided to give it a try. The complicate relationship Bliss shares with her friends is explained and when she needs to stand up for herself she does. I enjoyed her relationship with Aric, the turns it took, the way issues were resolved, the humor and will happily continue to buy this authors work.

I love this book, I read it a while ago and it was great. I enjoyed the characters Aric and Bliss, they are great together. I wanted to hurt her friends but loved how things turned out for Bliss and Aric.

Life saver

I have read the book many times and even have pages bookmarked that I revisit when I reach a new developmental stage and need advice for my baby. I like that it is not extreme (not attachment parenting but not the fever method either) so it gives balanced advice and doesn't guilt you for using one method over another. It also provides different options rather than preaching one "right" way.

Helped tremendously!

This book gets 5 stars and I haven't even read past the 3 month mark. Definitely saw improvement in my son's sleeping after implementing the 5 S's. He still wakes up 1-2 times a night to nurse but falls quickly back to sleep. We usually get at least one 5 hour stretch of sleep a night if not 2. "Triggering his calming reflex" has helped in other scenarios as well. After his 2 month shots, we were able to use the S's to calm him back down before we even left our exam room and didn't fuss at all that night! Very well written and explains a lot of the reasoning behind why these work and the science of sleep, which personally, I understand and remember things better if I understand why it works.

This book has been a life saver!! We were having lots of problems at bedtime and naps with our baby and after reading this book and following the tips my baby falls asleep at bedtime so much easier and takes her 3 naps a day! I recommend this book to everyone with a baby, or a pregnant mommy. It's a life saver, a must read!!!

About the Author
WILLIAM BEIK is professor of history at Emory University. An authority on the social and institutional history of seventeenth-century France, he is the author of Abolutism and Society: State Power and Provincial Aristocracy in Languedoc (1985), which won the 1986 Herbert Baxter Adams Prize of the American Historical Association, and of Urban Protest in Seventeenth-Century France: the Culture of Retribution (1987). He has written numerous articles and is coeditor of the New Approaches to European History series at Cambridge University Press.

I would recommend this book

The central argument seems to be that - absolutism didn’t exist in practice. Which I didn't consider particularly remarkable argument, as often theory falls short of practice.
It appears that the notional loyalty to King (as an absolute ruler) was already established. The book instead charts the efforts to overcome the practical obstacle to the Kings theoretical authority.
There is a focus on the early reforms of Louis XIV.
With original documents the quality of the evidence is very strong, and has incidental value on other points. Notably among the original document was Louise XIV letter to his son on ruling. For someone seeking an academic understanding of the Ancien Regime, I would recommend this book.

For a casual reading, most original documents are easy to read letters/diary entries about some interesting event the author wishes to provide insight into.

Comprehensive book with interseting documents

This books is not a traditional textbook. The author tells you about a certain situation or topic than provides primary documents from various sources showing different sides to that situation (Reformation in the Provinces, Religion, Managing France, The Aristocracy, etc). It's nice to get the eyewitness accounts of the events instead of just having the author tell you about them.

Filthy/Gorgeous

Tom Cardamone's writing is addictive.

I was first introduced to his work last year when I had the pleasure of reviewing the Lambda Literary Award winning Green Thumb. Since then I've sought out his other work and recently crossed paths with the filthy, gorgeous Pacific Rimming.

Pacific Rimming chronicles the sexual adventures of a nameless narrator who loses himself in drugs, the Manhattan gay club scene and his obsession with Asian men. He forms no attachments, preferring to move from one night stand to one night stand, attending only the bars and clubs where he knows he can indulge his paticular fetish.

This novella is worlds away from the speculative cataclysm of Green Thumb. Cardamone keeps this tale firmly rooted in 1990s New York City. And there is a grittiness and immediacy to his writing here that envelops the reader; you can feel the tingle of the drugs, smell the smoke and sex.

Pacific Rimming is yet another example of an artist who writes with a sure hand, comfortably at home in any genre he chooses to write in and navigating with ease the language that each tale needs to be told in. I'm very thankful to Chelsea Station Editions for bringing this book back into print, since it is not to be missed.
