The term steroid has become virtually synonymous with drug abuse in sport to the majority of the public. However these steroids - androgens - actually comprise only a single relatively small class of biologically active steroids, and are overshadowed by a large collection of compounds, a sizeable number of which are commercial drugs that share the same structural carbon skeleton. The development of these drugs has led to a large body of organic chemistry often denoted as "Steroid Chemistry".
Steroid Chemistry At A Glance provides a concise overview of the main principles and reactions of steroid chemistry. Topics covered include:
- history, isolation and structure determination of steroids
- steroid nomenclature and stereochemistry
- natural sources of steroids
- synthesis and reactions of aromatic a-ring steroids, androstanes, and pregnanes
- steroids with a spirolactone at position 17
- steroids with hetrocyclic ring A
- compounds derived from cholesterol
Based on the highly successful and student friendly "at a glance" approach, the information is presented in integrated, self contained double page spreads of text and illustrative material. Students of chemistry and pharmacy using Steroid Chemistry at a Glance will find they have a resource with which they can quickly, concisely and confidently acquire, regularly review and revise the basic facts that underpin the properties, synthesis and reactions of this important class of natural products. It will also serve as a handy bench reference for postgraduates and professional chemists.

Better than the average rating suggests
By Prof D
This is a solid 3-4 star contribution, written in the vein of the rest of the At a Glance series. It is a ready source of information for those weak in chemistry/structure finding themselves in need of a rapid introduction to the overall subject of steroids (e.g., toward pharmacy, pharmacology, or even chemical synthesis work, to provide a broader persspective than that of a single agent or family of targets). While sufficiently chemical, it is not overly so—it does not inundate with total synthesis, for instance. Rather, by chemical it implies an emphasis on the structural basis for functional differences (both in its organization and its text). For those needing a rubric, it is an effective one to organize thinking. Bottom line, a pretty effective primer. Given 5 stars (where 5-7 are actually needed), to offset the unjust 1 star given for poor Kindle performance alone—rather than anything regarding actual content. I will revise downward if that student reviewer reconsiders the justice associated with attacking an author and a work, for failing technology (largely outside of the author's control). The appended is about the author, from his Library of Congress entry. Prof D

Run on words and punctuation gives a poor kindle book
By David Hawes
I purchased and started reading this book today. Disappointment with the kindle edition (I'm up to scheme 3) for runonwords (sic) sometimes taking up to two line are the norm so far on about every page. (I am not referring to the chemical names but normal verbage) Something is amiss with this product. I am still looking for someone at Amazon to see if a corrected edition is available. I want to read the book but it is very disheartening.
Even worse, for example when going to a scheme other than 1, such as scheme 3, only scheme one is shown. I love Lednicer's work but the kindle edition is definitely wrong.
