Grade 9 Up—Sutter Keely, a high school senior, is determined to live in the moment. He eschews planning for the future, intent on letting the good times roll. Sutter's been downing six packs since seventh grade and is rarely without his flask of Seagram's. Despite the heavy drinking and some raunchy sex talk, he is initially a likable character with a fresh and funny voice, but his affability wanes quickly and that voice just doesn't ring true. He meets Aimee when he passes out on her front yard. Sutter isn't really interested at first and only dates her because he considers her a project, someone he can help become less of a social outcast. Along the way, he begins to come off as condescending and egotistical and his sarcasm isn't as comic. It's a well-written book told in first person, but the narration seems much too sophisticated to be believable. He uses phrases like, "I am…sore at heart" and utters phrases like, "the room brimmed with padded chairs." Some of the plot is also disconcerting. As the result of Sutter's drunk driving, Aimee is struck by a car on a highway and suffers only a broken arm. Here's a rule for all book reviewers: DO NOT GIVE AWAY THE ENDING TO THE NOVEL. That's something readers may want to discover for themselves!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and, like others, found myself simultaneously entranced and infuriated by Sutter Keely. Sutter is, for all of his faults,a likable person, but the world is moving past him while he's standing still: his best friend Ricky is moving past all of their partying and wild times and into a serious romantic relationship; the other students at school are looking past the "now" and into the future of college and work; even Sutter's own family is moving on in their own ways, while Sutter deludes himself that the Spectacular Now is enough for him.

"Voice" in YA novels is everything, and this novel certainly has that: Sutter Keely is a very familiar character (we all remember "that guy" from high school) and yet is uniquely his own person.

Highly recommended for both teens and adults: this novel is by turns warm, witty, wise, and heartbreaking.

Oh, and one more time: REMOVE THE SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEW OR ELSE WARN THAT IT SPOILS THE ENDING.

THE SPECTACULAR NOW is such an achingly humor-filled, intensely sad story, that it has taken me a couple of days of processing the emotions it stirred up before being able to talk about Sutter Keely. Having previously included KNIGHTS OF THE HILL COUNTRY (Tharp's previous book for teens) on my Best of 2006 list, I was well aware of the author's abilities, but this second book is Something Else. It is one that absolutely should be added to high school collections and to required reading lists for YA Lit students.

High school senior Sutter Keely is great friends with a long line of ex-girlfriends. He has a superb sense of humor, plays well with his peers, is forever the life of the party, and professes his affinity for embracing the weird. But as his latest relationship crumbles, he asks himself, "Why is it that girls like me so much but never love me." And, of course, as we come to learn, it is the damaged young alcoholic himself, and not the girls, who has the real problem. Or a number of real problems.

But then he has a chance pre-dawn meeting with a girl he's never noticed who is so unlike his partying crowd:

"She jerks back, startled to see me move. 'You're alive,' she says. 'I thought maybe you were dead.'
"I'm like, 'I don't think I'm dead.' But right now I can't exactly be sure of anything. 'Where the hell am I?'
"'You're in the middle of the yard,' she says. 'Do you know someone who lives here?'
"I sit up and look at the house -- an ugly, little, pink brick one with a window air-conditioner unit. 'No, I never saw it before.'
"'Were you in a wreck or something?'
"'Not that I know of, Why? Where's my car?'
"'Is it one of those?' She points toward the street where two cars are parked along the curb on our side and a junky white pickup is parked on the other side. The pickup's engine is idling so I guess it must be hers.
"'No, I drive a Mitsubishi,' I say. 'Jesus, I must have gone to sleep.' I look around, trying to gather my wits a little. A scraggly elm tree hangs over us and you can just see the moon through the branches. There's a rickety lawn chair stationed in the middle of the yard, and two beer cans lie in the grass a couple of feet away. I vaguely remember sitting in that lawn chair at some point, but I don't remember how I got there.
"'So,' she asks. 'You don't know where you left your car?'
"'Let me think for a second," I say, but my head's not really up for thinking. 'No, it's no good. I don't remember where it is. Maybe I parked it at home and just went out for a walk.
"She shakes her head. 'No, I don't think you live in this neighborhood, Sutter.'
"That surprises the hell out of me right there. 'How did you know my name? Were we talking a while ago or something?'
"'We go to the same high school,' she says, but she doesn't say it like I'm an idiot. She has a kind voice, kind eyes. She looks at me like I'm a bird she found with a broken wing."

Fellow senior Aimee Finecky has struggled to create order amidst the chaos that permeates her home life. She sees the path out of town and she has attained the grades necessary to head there. She has created a sanctuary of a bedroom. And then, as she completes her mother's nocturnal paper route alone -- while mom is off to the Indian casino -- she finds her schoolmate Sutter passed out in that front yard. So begins the story of Sutter and Aimee.

"'Oh yeah.' I take a long pull on the martini. 'Childhood was a fantastic country to live in.'"

There is so much more to this tale. For instance, Sutter's observations on the superficiality of the interaction taking place at his married sister's party -- in contrast to what he's experienced in hanging with his friends -- are hysterically funny and incredibly thought provoking. And Sutter's friend Ricky's meditations upon the longing desire for the miraculous, the role of drugs and alcohol in trying to resurrect the miraculous, and the built-in obsolescence that causes such remedies to ultimately fail when they are relied upon for filling the emptiness, are the kind of jaw-dropping amazing introspections that are so rarely developed to such an exquisite degree in young adult literature.

THE SPECTACULAR NOW impacted me so emotionally that I couldn't even think about reading something else for a few days.

"This stage in the life of the buzz is truly fabulous. It's not even a buzz anymore. It's a roar. The world opens up and everything's yours right here, right now. You've probably heard the expression -- All good things must come to an end. Well, this stage in the life of the buzz never heard anything close to that. This stage says, 'I will never end, I am indestructible. I will last fabulously forever.' And, of course, you believe it. To hell with tomorrow. To hell with all problems and barriers. Nothing matters but the Spectacular Now."

Not Really All That Spectacular

Another book I came across on Buzz Feeds 14 Books To Read Before They Hit The Big Screen. Full review to come.

It is touted as a coming of age type of story, which to me means that at somepoint in the story the person grows a little or learns a lesson. In that way, I feel like the author/book failed. To me Sutter is pretty much the same guy at the beginning of the book as he is at the end of the book.

The entire book is from Sutter's POV, which I have to admit is different. It is also a good thing. If not for POV and internal thinking, I would only think of him as a shallow, drunk, party boy, who only lives in the moment without ever thinking about the future or the consequences of his actions. Even with his POV these things are true, but you are also able to tell that he is hurting. I would more call this a slice of life type of book.

One day Sutter wakes up on a stranger's lawn with Aimee staring down at him. Sutter decides that Aimee who is a quiet, responsible girl, with her future all planned out, needs to loosen up and stand up for herself. He sets off with his plan to improve Aimee. Not everything goes as planned, but there does seem to be a connection between the two. Too bad we couldn't see what was happening through Aimee's eyes too.

Obviously with this book there is a lot of teen drinking, drugs, sex, and all around bad behavior.

I liked it all right, but did not find it spectacular by any means. I still plan on checking out the movie sometime, but I can already tell there are some definitely differences between the book and the movie.

I don't think I would recommend this book to my friends.

Strongly recommended for proactive young professionals

Best Investment In Myself. Ever.

This brilliant book is for anyone and everyone who has ever asked themselves why is my life not exactly how I imagined it even though I am a good person and hard worker. And for those who haven't asked that question, this book is the best in helping move away the cobwebs of the mind that prevent us from having true clarity and ownership of our true, authentic selves. Not whoooeeeooo spooky spiritual, Lisa A Romano has compiled 20 plus years of her own experience and has outlined a program that allows us to fearlessly face ourselves in order to become the best we can be. This book is for everyone. It's the best investment I've made in myself in a long, long time. I highly recommend this book.

A master of codependency.

Lisa is a true master. This book is liberating, inspiring, and aspirational. If you are a codependent or wondering what it is, read this book. Prepare to undo the lies that you have taken for granted as truth. Lisa's writing ability and expertise have increased extraordinarily since her first book (I have read all of them), and it only further captivates the reader. Whether you are on her YouTube page, watching a live video, or reading a book, you sense a deep connection to her. And not only that, but Lisa doesn't fancy herself a "guru" - she exhibits truly humility that we are all equal and have equal ability to heal, connect, and share love and light with the world. Thank you, thank you, thank, you Lisa. My only hope is that her coaching sessions will be discounted for students.

I love Lisa's work

I love Lisa's work, if you haven't seen her Vblog on you tube, if you can't afford therapy, I highly recommend it! It has changed my life! It is still changing my life! Lisa has a very empathetic and personable way of communicating to her audience, but her greatest gift is showing you exactly how to overcome the obstacles of your programming. She not only explains to you how your mind works against you, but gives you tools that address all the symptoms of co-dependency. Best of all she has done her own recovery work. She knows what she is talking about, not as distant observer but as a survivor of her own childhood programming. She has given me a lot of hope in very dark times, and I can't wait to see how much more I will learn from her. It will take time and dedication to sit down and do some of the exercises she suggests. But they are well worth it, if you believe you are well worth it. It's all about getting to know yourself, coming to terms with your past and having a vision for your future. Thank you Lisa!

Something for everyone

Rather like a "Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears" for a younger audience, this book is for anyone who enjoys a good fractured faerytale or stories from the fantasy realm. It has everything, from Yolen's continuation of Alice in Wonderland to the sad story of an Appalachian girl whose mother has returned to life as a vampire. While stories like "The Bridge's Complaint", a twist on the old Billy Goats Gruff story (told by an intellectual bridge) and "Lost Girls," a feminist version of Peter Pan, gave me a good laugh, stories like "Mama Gone," the vampire story, and "Bolundeers" were both sad and heartwarming. "Sea Dragon of Fife" was a tale of legendary proportions and "Wilding" added a bit of sci-fi to the bunch. You won't put the book down until you've read ALL of the stories--many times. And it's by Jane Yolen, it can't be BAD! Get it and be sure to read "Harlyn's Fairy" and "Winter's King," my personal favourites.

Impossible Not To Enjoy

Yolen is a literary genius, with a beautiful ability and talent to weave stories, either new or traditional in nature. Most of these short stories were gems. "Lost Girls" is a fractured version of Peter Pan, in which Darla, a lover of the Barrie story, finds the real Never-Never Land isn't all fun and games. "The Winter King" and "The Babysitter" also stand out, the former a fairy tale of a boy born to be a cold king; the latter an almost urban legend of a babysitter and things that go bump in the night.

Familiar Stories Tweaked

This book contains a series of short fantasy stories about young adults in very strange situations. A new version of Alice needs to find someone to defend her from the Jabberwock, a nightmare creature in Wonderland. Mandy Jane's mother has awakened from death as a vampire, who begins to terrorize their town. Harlyn sees fairies but her aunt worries she is just crazy, like her mother.

A teenaged girl, in the process of moving into her grandmother's house, picks up a strange egg that hatches something incredible. Robert goes after the sea monster that killed his two brothers. Zena, a girl of the future, goes "wilding" in Central Park, which seems like such fun until she comes across a dead body.

Hilary thought the ritual she went through while babysitting the twins was silly, but they insisted it kept her safe from what haunts their house. Could that really be true? Brancy thinks the memory of her dead father could help to ward off the danger in their compost pile.

The Billy Goats Gruff are shown to be the villains they really are. Aliens have landed in Brandon's town, and he thinks he can figure out how to get rid of them.

A boy is born dead, but his father brings him back to life. As he grows, he is only comfortable in wintertime. Darla ends up in Never-Never Land where she finds out that, for a girl, living there isn't much fun at all.

These stories are all very strange, and some are really well told. They take fairy tales, well known children's stories and urban legends, and tweak them into something more interesting.

The distinctively yellow-bound Shell Bitumen Handbook, first published in 1949 and now issued in its sixth edition, is certainly one such valued book. It replaces the fifth edition of 2003 and is completely reorganised, thoroughly updated and expanded by around 50%. Three principal authors, led by civil engineer and expert asphalt consultant, Dr Robert Hunter, are supported by a panel of specialist authors, many of whom are with Shell Bitumen. Those familiar with the fifth edition will find the chapters rearranged somewhat, with a net increase in chapters from 20 to 24 and a doubling of appendices from 4 to 8. The new chapter sequence approximately follows the life of bitumen, from its origins and manufacture, through its properties and use in asphalts, then design, installation and performance of asphalt pavements, to durability and other applications for bitumen and asphalt. Two of the new appendices indicate an objective to make the handbook more international: Appendices 5 and 6, respectively, list bitumen and asphalt product standards across the world. In the former, different principles are used in various regions, with performance graded (PG) specification being used in North America and partly in China, whereas empirical testing is used elsewhere, such as penetration/softening in Europe, Africa and much of Asia, and viscosity in Australasia, the Indian subcontinent, Mexico and parts of South America (and for soft grades in Europe); unfortunately, there is some minor inconsistency between the text and the map in Appendix 5. A surprising omission from the previous edition was guidance on the design of asphalt mixtures. This gap is well and thoroughly addressed in the new edition, with a completely new, 50-page Chapter 12. In common with all the chapters in this book, Chapter 12 is clearly written and beautifully presented, being both easy and a pleasure to read, supported by full-colour diagrams of impressive clarity; there are no photographs in this particular chapter, but elsewhere there are plenty of good-quality images, as appropriate. This new chapter provides a grounding in the principles that underpin asphalt mix design, notably mixture volumetrics and aggregate grading , then explains the four most widely implemented design methods, all of which were developed in the USA: Hubbard Field , Hveem (or California ), Marshall (or Corps of Engineers , perhaps the best known) and Superpave (the most recent, resulting from a research programme initiated in response to increasing premature pavement failures). As well as reorganisation and the new chapter on asphalt mix design, existing users will be pleased to know that this new edition sets out to update the whole opus, and two splendid examples are the completely new Chapter 7 on rheology of bitumens and the extended Chapter 8 (formerly Chapter 5) on polymer-modified bitumens and other modified binders. The former is a most valuable 30-page addition on a critical property, especially with the growth in the use of polymer-modified bitumens, authored jointly by specialists from Shell (Dr Richard Taylor) and the University of Nottingham (Professor Gordon Airey). Gorgeous photography

Beautiful photos of truly classic American cars. The book has narrative about the makers, the history of Fred and Augie Duesenberg and how they started out in 1913, the evolution of the Duesenberg from the Model A all the way through the 1934 Town Car. Very few were made; almost all of them were custom made for the buyer. They were expensive, elegant, fast and real status symbols. I have been a fan of this car for many years. I'm not an auto historian or expert, so I can't really comment on the accuracy or technical specs, I bought the book purely for the photos.

There are some really beautiful color shots of these cars next to old stately homes, some in Jay Leno's collection, and some from the Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg museum. Some nice shots of the engine. I was hoping for more interior shots. The book is heavy & awkward to hold, I rated it three stars because of the lack of photos on the covered cars (less than 10% of the book- 27 pages) of the 1934 town cars, and interior photos. The book just sort of ends, kind of like the company. It's a good review of a classic, there's an intro from Jay Leno, a section on some of the vehichles from the museum in Indiana and an appendix listing all of the model J chasis & engines built.

Duesenberg Book Needing Serious Competent Editing.

Adler's book is so full of technical errors that it is only worth buying for the glitzy photos.

Examples: The Duesenberg racing cars at Indy did not use Roots blowers as he states and goes on to describe in faulty detail, they used centrifugal superchargers. Hundreds of photos exist of these cars and engines.

Also used on some Model A cars, which he doesn't mention.

The Model A gets very short representation.

The stock J engine never developed 265 hp, more like 165-182 hp on observed dyno tests of four engines.

The SJ also never put our anything like 320 hp, even with the dual carburetor setup. 215 hp on a personally observed dyno test of a perfectly restored engine.

There is a decided lack of photos of WW-I aircraft engines and the plant interiors, which are available.

The engineering aspects of the Duesenberg cars, race engines, and their good engineering, gets short shift.

There is a notable lack of any accurate technical information, only the gee-whiz factor.

This book need some very serious editing and revisions by someone who really knows what the Duesenberg cars were all about. As a history book on the Duesenberg cars, it is sadly lacking.

Bought this after coming back from a visit to the Dusenburg Museum in Indiana.
Even a bad book about Dusenburgs is wonderful, and this is a very good book.
Photography is superb, and the test and captions are informative.
