About the Author
Marianne Cusato has received international attention for her design of the Katrina Cottages: affordable, durable home kits created as an alternative to FEMA trailer housing to help the Gulf Coast rebuild. The cottage won the Cooper-Hewitt People's Design Award and has been written up in magazines and newspapers across the country, from Architectural Record and Cottage Living to Time and Forbes. She is the principal of Cusato Cottages, LLC, a New York-based firm specializing in traditional architectural design.

Perfect while incomplete

This is an easy book to understand. If you are looking to emulate a style pre-1900 (e.g. Greek Revival), it is perfect. It describes in great detail, not only the right way, but also the wrong. I can't complain. The rub is what the author considers architecture and not. The forward describes the "scourge" of modern architecture. Some of the best architecture out there is modern, although there is a lot of bad modern style. A book like this wouldn't work for modern, but there is 80 years or so between the end of the author's view of high architecture and the "scourge" of modern and it is severly lacking. Arts & Crafts, Craftsman, Bungalow, Prairie, etc. are all styles that have rules that need to be followed and quite honesty, I am shocked there is not one page mentioning them. The book keeps mentioning the need for vertical lines (important to styles pre-1840 or so) and specificall noting to avoid horizontal lines (the most important factor for Prairie). Bottom line: if you want a traditional style, this is a great book. If you want a style post-Queen Anne, not only is this book not helpful, it would actually discourage it.

Just what the doctor ordered

I have struggled for years with design issues in the buildings I renovate and (sometimes) modify. It is the "just doesn't look right" syndrome where you spend money and time on what you think is a good idea, but when it's done you can tell it looks goofy, or backwards, or convoluted or something.

Well this book is exactly addressed to people like me - indoctrinating the reader to the (seemingly) rigid rules of traditional architecture that have evolved over the centuries since we emerged from caves. It's like getting an abbreviated overview of the lessons learned by earlier generations of builders, condensed into a readable book. Probably the most notable lesson I gleaned from it is the importance of details on the overall look and feel of a building.

I know I'm not going to necessarily follow every rule on every decision I make - economics play an important role too - but at least now I have a little better understanding of where I can cut corners, and where spending a little more on the right details will be crucial. It's like having the wisdom of the ages at your back when making design decisions.

One thing that attracts me to traditional architecture is that it comes from times where buildings were much more monumental accomplishments than they are today. With our concrete and steel, equipment and technological advances, buildings go up in a matter of days rather than years, and will be replaced just as quickly if we decide we don't like them. Sometimes the way they look reflects this lack of thought necessary for their contstruction.

If you follow the guidance provided by this book, you building will at least look like an accomplishment worth celebrating.

AKA - What not to do - and why

Ever drive down a beautiful street of houses, and then see one house that just doesn't fit? The first question we usually ask is "why would they do that here?" I can think of a few houses in some of my town's historic streets where people ask this question all the time. Often some small changes of just smaller windows, proper window panes, or appropriate styling for the neighborhood would help make this work. This book helps put us all down this path - and teaches us about the details we often intuitively see as wrong, but do not understand or "see" why they don't fit. I learned quite a bit about design, style and an understanding of not only the reasons why the pre-fabricated house in town does not fit in, but how the design could have been changed - and the house could likely have been built at the same cost, yet fit into the streetscape. If you are building a house, restoring a house joining a historic Commission, planning board, or anything that has authority over buildings, you should read this book...

About the Author

Gastón Acurio was born in Lima, Peru in 1967. He has created an international empire, exporting Peruvian cuisine around the world. Acurio owns more than 44 international restaurants, including three locations of La Mar restaurant in the USA. He plans to open more locations around the world in the next two years, including in Washington DC. Acurio is a host of a television program in Peru and is met by tens of thousands of fans wherever he makes a public appearance. People have started endorsing Gastón Acurio as the next Peruvian president in several newspaper articles, Facebook fan pages, TV debates and a new movie, Finding Gastón, from Peruvian director Patricia Perez. His main restaurant Astrid y Gastón is on the San Pellegrino World’s Best Restaurants list at # 18. He won the lifetime achievement award at the Latin America Best Restaurants in 2013.

I ask Emilia Terragni, Phaidon's Queen of Cookbooks, Phaidon's co-publisher, to read on and tell me, who did you delegate this project to? Who chose LINGOLEAF for translation of this very important book in the lives, not only of Gaston Acurio, but of every Peruvian in Peru and abroad?

I am Peruvian, a mestizo, I have a passion for cooking and I love cookbooks! It is like an obsession for me, always trying to find the best and the latest cookbook published about the ethnic cuisines I am interested in! Been cooking for my family for more years than I want to remember and here I am giving a very opinionated impression of this particular book which I still love to have, regardless of my thoughts about it.

I love Gaston Acurio Jaramillo for all that he has taught us Peruvians! Si se puede! Yes you can! He is a fine and very good example of what the new generations of Peruvians can do with their future and a source of constant inspiration for all of us! He has integrity, resourcefulness, ideas and leads us on the ways that have to be trodden if we think we have a vision of success for ourselves. That if you have a dream you can materialize that dream if you work hard, have the right partner of course, and the right mom. I believe intensely that both his wife, Astrid, and his mother, were and still are, hopefully, powerful influences in his life and thus share his success. But, you see, I believe that others involved in this project had a sloppy, unfocused, unorganized attitude and working methods and have done him "un flaco favor..." this time. And this makes me angry!

PERU: THE COOKBOOK, is not a bad book. It is great if you look at it from other angles that I cannot, at this moment, even guess. Perhaps I am too in love with my Peruvian food, but I guess it is a good starting point for those who want to know more about Peru, our cooking and food stuffs. Hopefully more people around the world will get to know us a little bit more and... and a little better! But...

THE COVER: Not inspiring. Warm and cuddly and just right enough for a baby blanket... It is obviously a woman's woven "lliclla". Lliclla colors are deep, meaningful, dark and vibrant lines of browns, blacks, reds, greens, yellows; inter-sped with white and occasional deep purples, lilacs, and oranges... not pastels... These colors show our character, strong determination, deeply rooted values. Who thought of pastels for the cover?

THE LAYOUT: Not practical enough to place on kitchen counter. Too narrow in width. If "management" wanted a "coffee-table cookbook" they missed their mark. It does not look like one, does not open like one, lacks sufficient photography... Paper could have been better! Colors differentiating sections not adequately conceived. Hardly any headnotes. Personally, reading well-crafted headnotes makes me feel warm, cozy, as if I knew the author and together we embark in this adventure where he is giving me the reasons he chose this recipe or his path. Or shares something funny that was memorable. And I smile with him, or her...

RECIPE WRITING: Gaston's recipes have been interpreted carelessly. Lousy and missing descriptions vital to their understanding. Not enough clarity. CONSISTENCY IS ABSENT! There was plenty of space, "down there after the recipe" at the bottom of the page to add notes to enlighten the reader !!! The lack of respect towards Acurio's recipes is amazing, baffling and suspect... Typos abound! The printer could have been better chosen. Several strong editorial revisions should have been made.

LINGOLEAF: Translation Group --- Where you there? I mean you, Anne and Josefin. Really? Was this a job you honestly cared about as anybody working on translations of any language usually does? Did you employ people that not only knew the language but the culture and the meaning of each word for that country in particular? Tell me, I pray, what are "mollejitas" in Peru? Are they, come on, really "sweetbreads"? Of chicken? Did you know that here in the U.S. "mollejas" are known as "chicken gizzards"? Yes. Even in America... I am talking in culinary terms. Current vernacular, every day language in this country.

Chicken sweetbreads? Are you joking? When you go, in New York City, to a "fancy" English or French restaurant and order "sweetbreads" what do you think is coming to you?... Did you accept the language "version" south of the border? Do you know that Peruvians and Colombians are the only two countries in Latin America that speak true Castillian Spanish in their daily lives? Did you know that this Spanish is NOT A DIALECT but the very essence of our lives in Peru, Colombia and Spain and the only proper, educated language, used academically and intellectually to address one another and make sense?

Example: How about translating "papa seca" as "dehydrated flaked potatoes"?... Do you personally know what "papa seca" is? Did you see Gaston's description at the beginning of that recipe for Carapulcra state... "each piece of (dried) potato gradually develops a lovely al-dente texture..." My question: the translation states "dehydrated flaked potatoes..." What comes to mind is more like those potato flakes by Oreida and others, ready to make mashed potatoes. Could that develop "a lovely al-dente texture..."? Can you close your eyes and imagine the "texture" of potato flakes...? Al dente...? Can you see what I mean?

Example: What about the "animalitos" business? It is the function and duty of a good, responsible translator to point this "word" out of the bunch to both the author and the editor co-publisher and suggest that a substitute word be found or a substantial explanation be given. Do you agree? Good, because to me it sounds as if somebody is making fun of somebody or something and I don't like it. A learned translator would have asked if Original Ritz Crackers would do the trick, right? Or something else, right?

TRANSLATION IS AWFUL, CARELESS, MINDLESS and, again, made in speed time to finish before five p.m., get it over with, smile a lot and go for tapas... Well, you are young only once and for a brief time, right? Come on, let's go on... forward... Hurry up! Understandable... I get it...

"Poor Man's Tacu-Tacu." A poor man using Peruvian canary beans...? For Xmas perhaps. A poor man in Peru, to feed his family, uses anything out of legumes or carbos like potatoes, to prepare a Tacu-Tacu and yet, many of the comments on the opinions of the pundits on-line that have been fed the adequate marketing buzz describe this particularly named recipe as using only canary beans. If you go to the market canary beans are one of the most expensive beans in the place. Sooo Wall Street and so sophisticated! Guess who sent the message for the one-line comment repeated often enough and throughout on cyberspace and book sections of newspapers...?

The worse part of everything, altogether, is wordiness, windiness, excessive verbosity. It is so pervasive that I do not have the time or the will to go into it. So much wasted space! Giving way to forget to add, at the bottom of each page, an explanation to enhance that particular recipe, making it more palatable, more accessible or even to describe ancient Inca ways to prepare food, such as BATAN, our original food processor... Shame!

And, as a customer, I don't even have those plain "dumb" pages of SOURCES or lists of places where I can go on-line and order ingredients or products to finalize the preparation of the exquisite delights described in the book. What a missed opportunity to promote our manufactured Peruvian home-grown products... Are you there PROMPERU? I don't have to go into the INDEX problem. Some of the other reviews have taken care of this... Wie Schade!

These are my views and my opinions, of course, but I concur with the reviewers before me. All in all, not bad but IT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER! Much better! We all know and love Gaston Acurio Jaramillo dearly and neither him nor our country deserved this.

Personally, one last thing... Take Ferran Adria to be Chef at this sushi joint in wherever? No wonder Ferran laughed! He must still be laughing! And speaking of one liners fed to the "pundits" in book reviews at The Wall Street Journal "et al..." GASTON ACURIO JARAMILLO placed at the level of Jamie Oliver and Anthony Bourdain...? Excuse me, are you there? Are you for real? With all due respect to these two nice entertaining Chefs, but really? Hello? Not living in Colorado yet, are you? You have no idea what is there out of your space. Do you? I invite you to come over...

Disappointing

Was so disappointed with this book. Purchased it as soon as it came on the market. I lived in Peru for a year and ate at his restaurant there. The recipes did not make sense I even wondered if Mr. Acurio wrote this book? A chef who creates such beautiful food could not possibly allow a book so poorly put together to represent him. Cookbook tossed aside never to be opened again.

From thin films to field effect transistors, the emphasis is on reducing dimensions from the micro to the nanoscale. Fundamentals of Nanoscale Film Analysis concentrates on analysis of the structure and composition of the surface and the outer few tens to hundred nanometers in depth. It describes characterization techniques to quantify the structure, composition and depth distribution of materials with the use of energetic particles and photons.

The book describes the fundamentals of materials characterization from the standpoint of the incident photons or particles which interrogate nanoscale structures. These induced reactions lead to the emission of a variety of detected of particles and photons. It is the energy and intensity of the detected beams that is the basis of the characterization of the materials. The array of experimental techniques used in nanoscale materials analysis covers a wide range of incident particle and detected beam interactions.

Included are such important interactions as atomic collisions, Rutherford backscattering, ion channeling, diffraction, photon absorption, radiative and nonradiative transitions, and nuclear reactions. A variety of analytical and scanning probe microscopy techniques are presented in detail.

Great Resource, Too Many Typos

I am a Ph. D student studying nanoscale films for my dissertation. I use this book very often to study spectroscopy techniques. However, there are numerous typographical errors that I can't even get into. Some of the values in the appendices are completely wrong. The book often refers to equations and figures that don't even exist. But, it still gets three stars for being such a compact and efficient resource for the physics behind many analytical techniques. If you have elementary physics knowledge already then this is a great book.

The two attempt to figure out why Annie is here, as they begin to develop feelings for each other. Though Howe employs a well-worn trope—the concept of a spirit who can't rest until a terrible wrong is rectified—she does so deftly, ratcheting up the tension as she switches between the protagonists' first-person perspectives and weaving in themes of class and privilege. While Wes and Annie are separated by nearly two centuries, Howe nails their voices—that of an insecure film student yearning to make his mark and of the upper-class young woman attempting to break free from a gilded cage—imbuing them with relatable turmoil and angst. The language is immediate and gripping, with a hint of sensuality; the surreal, eerie chapters told from Annie's understandably confused perspective contrast wonderfully with Wes's more straightforward sections, and Howe's exploration of New York City, both past and present, is spot on. I devoured this book. It is a suspenseful and intriguing read about an impossible romance set against the backdrop of NYC, both in the present and in 1825. The main characters Wes and Annie are incredibly well-developed and fascinating and the story is a wonderful mix of historical fiction, romance and the supernatural. A terrific book for readers of all ages.

Compelling mix of historical fiction, the supernatural and romance

This is a wonderful mix of historical fiction, the supernatural, and romance. While studying at NYU in hopes of becoming a documentary film maker, Wes meets and strange but lovely girl, Annie. He and his buddy are filming a seance and Annie is blocking the shots. The narrative shifts between NYC in 1825 and the present, and from the first person perspective of first Wes, then Annie. This is brilliantly done.

Don't let the 400 pages scare you. I bought the book yesterday and finished it today. It's fast-paced, has a good mystery, some twists, and the characters are all fascinating.

Highly recommended for readers 14 and up.

You know what pains me the most about doing non-spoiler reviews? The fact that I can't fully describe how I felt about a story.

Here's my problem. The Appearance Of Annie Van Sinderen was such a spectacular read, that I want to yell to the skies above about every moment, every emotion, every DETAIL, of what I experienced. Buttttttt since I want my readers to go in with an open mind, (open mouth sounded way too pervy lol) I'll try to refrain from spilling too many beans . . .

The Appearance of Annie is one of those stories that completely flew over my head for the first 200 or so pages. I was so engrossed by the mysterious creepiness of the writing and characters, that I never bothered to stop and think, " why exactly is all of this even HAPPENING? " Every couple or so pages, I'm literally saying aloud, " WHAT IS GOING ON? " because I was so freaking lost, but in the best damn way. It reminded me of the time my step-sister and I were lost in New York. We didn't panic, or even care to be honest, because we were so in AWE of our surroundings, so swept up into the energy of the city, and if any experience could be compared to reading this book, this would definitely be it.

My absolute favorite thing about The Appearance of Annie is the plot. The characters could've been as flat as my next door neighbor's booty, (they weren't of course) and I bet you a pre-order, I would've loved it all the same. The story follows our two main characters Wes and Annie in a very strange way. Wes, a college student attending NYU's summer program for film, and Annie a . . . girl from the . . . 1800's. Part one is told from Wes's perspective and all his typical boy glory. I loved his character, especially his passion for making documentaries, which happens to be a serious obsession of mine. Annie's perspective on the other hand, was a wholeee nother ball game. I was so intrigued by her story, and how the author cleverly weaved the classic tale of Rip Van Winkle into the mix.

Speaking of Rip Van Winkle, remember how he fell asleep, then woke up in a time completely different from his own? Well, imagine my expression when I FINALLY discovered that the same had happened to Annie. Can you even cope with being born in a time where they didn't have cars, cellphones, or even airplanes? Then BAM, you wake up and your town seems normal, but suddenly cobblestone streets turn into slick pavement, markets and other grubby buildings turn into sleek glass structures scraping the sky, and even walking down the street feels like your watching some type of weird porn. I would've totally s*** my pants. Howe infused historical fiction with our modern day world, allowing the story to be not only amusing, (Annie's reactions to the new-age was so cute) but trippy as hell. To say I was a kid in a candy store would be an understatement.

Katherine's work is so pleasantly unreal, allowing readers the perfect fictional escape.
I found myself completely taken away by the premise, the characters, the flow, even the charm of it all, and before I knew it, the story had ended, and far to quickly for my tastes. I adored this unusual take on a love story between two characters from two different centuries, not to forget the quirky secondary characters that made the story that much more enjoyable.

The writing was beyond captivating, with the perfect mixture of a well done contemporary, fantasy, a sprinkle of historical fiction, and a dash of paranormal elements, making this a special treat for every reader. The Appearance of Annie Van Sinderen mashes the past and present, real with the unreal, so if you're ready to frazzle your wits with this out of body experience, I highly recommend you pick this up.

Her interest in travel began with an epic three-month adventure in the United States after she left school. At university, she spent a year living and studying in France. Harriot's first job was as a public relations consultant, but 10 years ago she swapped sides to become a journalist. A former features editor of a business magazine, she is now a freelancer and writes on subjects as diverse as hotshot entrepreneurs and mouthwatering homes.

Excellent for budget travel

This was my first London travel guide, the one I bought when I had never before been to the UK, when I knew very little of London, and when I was on a student budget. It's been an exceedingly valuable resource ever since I purchased it in 2000. London is notoriously expensive, but this guide manages to seek out restaurants and hotels that don't break the bank. I especially appreciated the specific section on restaurants which are open until the wee hours- essential when arriving late and fighting jet lag. London being a large city of distinct neighborhoods, this guide is organized by neighborhood, and discusses specific hotels and restaurants within each neighborhood.

This book has many virtues, but by far its best section, in my opinion, is the section on sightseeing and entertainment bargains. London has many fine musuems which charge no admission. Its churches offer a wealth of affordable, sometimes free, concerts. This guide doesn't just explain which well-known sights can be enjoyed at a low cost, it also introduced me to a whole range of sights and events I didn't know existed.

I've been to London a number of times since my first trip, but I still reach for this guide. A very valuable resource.

Fantastic reference for the accomplished and the aspiring!

'Painting Realistic Wildlife...' contains beautiful artistry and very clear, detailed step-by-step techniques that are sure to help both aspiring art students and the accomplished artisan alike. I am currently an art student, and I wish I would have had this book with me when I was taking my traditional painting courses. I have gained more from this book than I have in all of my painting classes combined. This book shows better techniques for fleshing in and blocking in painting compositions, and it helps to achieve photorealistic details with the more difficult elements like fur, textured skin and scales. William Silvers has done a fantastic job sharing his talent and techniques with the world!
