Caecilia Pieri, a senior editor at Editions du Patrimoine, Paris, is a scholar of architecture, urbanism, and cultural heritage. She has a PhD ib History of Architecture and Urbanism from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). She has traveled widely in the Middle East for over twenty years.

I liked the book but would have appreciated a few more color pictures ..especially of tile work...The vintage photos were great and you really got a feel for a Baghdad I had no idea existed. The cover of the book is spectacular... I would have liked to see more or that kind of workmanship on the interior... but I really liked the book. Pleased to have it in my collection

LEWIS C. LIN is CEO of Impact Interview, an interview coaching firm. Lewis was named by CNN as one of the "top 10 job tweeters you should be following." He has also been featured on FOX, ABC News, San Francisco Chronicle, The Atlantic, The Telegraph, and Business Insider.

Before Impact Interview, Lewis was Microsoft's Director of Product Management. Prior to Microsoft, he worked at Google, leading new AdWords product launches.

Concrete, critiqued examples galore!

This book is a primer on the marketing interview and gives you many example answers to questions you will hear when in the hot seat. Marketing interviews are that combination of theory and practice that makes them so difficult. The author helps out by providing frameworks (STP, Perceptual Maps, ROI) for the theories and examples for the practice. Questions ran the gamut from consumer packaged goods companies, retailers, to service orgs. These concrete examples will help you by identifying what in your experiences need to be highlighted to answer the interviewer most effectively.

As you create your own answers to the questions, you can compare yourself against sample responses and measure yourself against the assessment the author gives for each question. This is an excellent learning approach for the new marketing professional or the veteran because you get a checklist of what interviewers are looking for and critiques of the good and bad answers. In my case, I've probably forgotten more marketing than I remember, and this book served as an excellent refresher on the core concepts that are important for the marketing role, while reminding me of all the examples and story from my marketing career.

Questions on how to run a social media campaign or run a drone delivery service are so timely and will help you think creatively about innovation. One area I would like to see the book emphasize more is on how to research a company, particularly its branding and marketing history. Very often interviewees fail to do their homework on a company.

With this book as your homework before the interview, though, you will get a comprehensive guide to what'll be asked in a marketing interview and how to carry yourself in a competent, believable, and persuasive manner.

Rise Above - And Cut Through - The Noise

Think about the classic marketing interviews at Proctor & Gamble, Campbell Soup, General Mills, Nordstrom, Merck, American Express, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Target. What's the one thing that they have in common? Tough hypothetical case interviews.

This is the best resource to get you ready for these questions. Pricing, critiquing advertising, creating marketing plans, competing against private label, calculating campaign ROI - this book covers those questions - and more.

I've read other interview preparation books, and the closest that comes to Rise Above the Noise is Marc Cosentino's Case in Point, which is a great book, but t is focused too much on management consulting interviews. If you've got a marketing interview, this is an essential component of your preparation. The author has customized all of the tips and sample cases to be marketing-specific, and you won't get bogged down in irrelevant questions (like how to value an oil tanker).

The hardest part of preparing for a high-pressure interview is practicing the concepts. The frameworks are easy-to-understand, easy-to-implement, and logical. And most important, you can get to the right answer quickly. My two favorite frameworks are the ROI worksheet and the pricing worksheet. I have always struggled with questions on evaluating price changes or calculating ROI on marketing campaigns, but Lin totally nails it with the ROI and pricing worksheets. It helped me figure out how to approach the problem with confidence and tact.

If you have a marketing interview and you're looking to really prepare thoroughly and be at the cutting edge of the competition, I highly recommend Rise Above the Noise.

Got the job!

Great book with no fluff, READ ALL OF IT!

I'm an MBA student and I recently pivoted from non-profit management to product management with a tech company. My internship was with a Bay Area start-up and I have an offer with a large global tech company for the following year. This book covers much more than tech, it's for all marketing interviews.

I read this in conjunction with Lewis Lin's other book, Decode and Conquer, and will say that these books are COMPLETELY different. There is nearly 0 overlap between the two and reading each one will give you different frameworks to work with, this one obviously tailored to a marketing interview.

Lewis takes you through classic marketing interview questions and delves into what the interviewer is REALLY asking, beyond what the question itself asks. He not only gives examples of bad responses (which is how I would have responded to these questions in the past) and how they can be improved and why. The frameworks proposed in the book are clear and concise. This is a good thing because the last thing you want to do is try to run through a complicated framework in the hotseat of an interview. Simple frameworks allow you to organize your thoughts and share it with the interviewer in a way that the interviewer will understand exactly what you are talking about.

Overall I love the progression of this book and how it's organized. There's also no wasted sections, every part of this book is in there for a reason and very meaningful. I would go as far as saying some MBA programs should require this as a supplement to marketing classes, it takes a theoretical approach given in MBA classroom and applies very practical uses that can be used in interviews as well.

An OK read

The Thief and the Princess is a short story. As such, I found it to be an OK read, but it didn't absolutely hook me. Speaking personally, I feel there wasn't enough time to fully develop the true love aspect within the frame of TTATP, and some plot points could have been expanded to feel better explained. On another note, the erotic degradation/humiliation in regards to the name-calling wasn't my favorite thing, but who knows, it might well be yours? I did like the father-daughter interaction, though brief, because it felt real to me. I give this short story three stars. It was OK.

Other Thoughts: Even though she's a modern day princess and carries around a cell phone, some old world concepts/devices are still utilised as part of the plot. I'd call it fusion more so, but it can be called fantasy too, I guess. So maybe it's a subset or subgenre sort of deal? Wow, now I'm thinking it would be great to expand this theme, explore this world better.

About the Author
Richard E. Brown is a University Research Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. We may find this book funny now, but as a 19-year old I got a hold of this book and read it cover to cover. Since we all know how pathetic sex education in schools or from our parents is, it's not surprising how much this book taught me about my body and what to expect from a man as I was coming of age. Even though it is written for a man, as a young woman it was great to learn what to learn ways to get turned on and how to encourage my boyfriend to be a better lover.

Excellent novelization, satisfying end to the original trilogy

Beware the Power of the Dark Side! is a great retelling of Return of the Jedi for kids. It is more than a straightforward narration, as it is sprinkled with author's asides to the reader, along with the occasional footnote (some of which are quite funny).

Tom Angleberger really gets the themes of ROTJ, and brings them out very well for young readers. We see how the influence of Luke helps Anakin resurface through the layers of Vader, for instance. I am also glad that the author included Luke asking Obi-Wan about his mother on Dagobah, because of course he would! That's a nice addition to the new canon that feels very natural and appropriate.

All in all, I found this book very satisfying. In its own way, reading it was as satisfying as watching the film. I am a school librarian, and I know many of my students will be clamoring for this book as soon as I add it to my collection.

Open the eyes of your young reader to the wonder of Star Wars

This is a great retelling of Return of the Jedi. My youngest daughter, who is a big Star Wars fan has been reading these books and has been loving them. As a part of her reading them, she has been reading them to me too, and I have to say that as a fan the author did a great job capturing the essence of the movie, but beyond that, he also goes beyond that and allows the reader to gain better perspective about the characters and the situations that occur in this timeline.

This is a great book and one that goes beyond the cannon and opens the eyes of young readers to the wonders and the world of Star Wars and as a fan and as a father I am so glad that this and the other books in the series have been available.

About the Author

LUKE TIMOTHY JOHNSON is Professor of New Testament at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has won Lilly Endowment fellowships and has written numerous articles and books on the New Testament for scholars and laypeople.

ably and admirably argues against the critical consensus

No one to date has argued for the unity of the argument of the letter of James more systematically and more cogently than L. T. Johnson. While M. Dibelius' atomized reading of James continues to dominate the critical approach, Johnson's rejection of his basic premise that James is a series of unrelated moral exhortations is both fresh and appealing. Johnson's well-researched historical scholarship is balanced by his close reading of the text. Johnson discovers the overarching theme of the message of James in the antithesis between friendship with the world and friendship with God (Jas 4:4). The unity of James' argument is discovered in the injunction against "double-mindedness," the attempt to live according to two perceptions or measures of reality (or two "wisdoms": the world's measure and God's measure. James' discussion of faith and works fits this overall framework, directed against those who claim to embrace God's measure (faith), but whose works reveal another wisdom at work in their members.
Johnson could have followed through on a number of exegetical issues he just touches on. For example his identification of the OT prophetic idiom in James' call to covenant conversion (Jas 4:7-10) is a promising avenue which he fails to explore. Johnson is also inconsistent in his thesis that James is a protreptic discourse, an address to a community of profession (i.e. "the faith of Jesus Christ" (Jas 2:1)) calling for consistency of life with profession. Johnson fails adequately to take into consideration the particular address to "the twelve tribes of the diaspora" (Jas 1:1) governs the scope of the discussion as it limits James' audience. Where, however, he does remember his thesis, the commentary is very insightful and profitable.
As with the Anchor Bible series a familiarity with theological idiom and a basic understanding of Greek is requisite.

Excellent technical commentary

Overall, this is an excellent commentary. I am using it along with 2 others in study of James. Johnson is long on technical and historical background, but is often short on application. Once in a while, verse background is quite brief, and I've found this at times when I was looking for more.

The introduction is second to none, with Johnson's survey of the interpretation of James of highest value. Johnson explodes the myth of the Paul vs. James debate, demonstrating that this is purely a modern controversy thrust on the text. Johnson further shows that from a historical perspective, that the faith vs. works debate, is also a modern development. The church through the ages has held that these two emphases of salvation and their authors have never been viewed as contradictions.

Of the James Commentaries in current research, simply the best

This is the most comprehensive James commentary currently on the market, plain and simple. It offers an extended meditation not only on how the letter of James fits into the New Testament, something all commentaries engage, but it also succinctly incorporates an impressive milieu of works contemporary to James that help to flesh out both its composition and its meaning.

Furthermore, scholarship in the Epistle of James has been notoriously focused on the "James v. Paul" fight, while ignoring some of the unique qualities of the letter that make it what it is. Johnson expertly engages the Pauline question without dwelling on it, and places, rightly so, the emphasis back squarely on the letter itself, letting its theological voice be heard in its own right.

For anyone serious in the area of biblical studies who wants an insightful and deep commentary on one of the most controversial and neglected works of the NT, I recommend this work highly.

Cheaters and The Cheated

The Cheating Curve by Paula T. Renfroe is an entertaining and extremely frank look at cheating within marriage. The novel also tells the story from the perspective of both men and women and allows the reader to make his or her own decision about how they view what is occurring.

Aminah Anderson has been married to `Fame' Anderson since she graduated from college. He owns a music production company and she is a stay-at-home mom. In their early thirties they have all that money could buy, however, Fame allows women to provide sexual favors for him. He does not consider it as cheating and Aminah has looked the other way for years. But, a series of radio references about her husband is causing her to rethink her position. Will she continue to live the way she has or will she decide she deserves better?
Langston `Lang' Rogers is Aminah's best friend of over 25 years and she tells her everything. Well, almost everything. She has not told Aminah that she is cheating on Sean, her husband of four years, and that she will probably never have the baby that Sean craves. Lang is convinced that Aminah would not understand and she is sure she can have her cake and eat it too. But can she and what will she do if her best friend does not support her?

Ms. Renfroe did a wonderful job of bringing us into the lives of Aminah and Lang and exposing us to the reasons that married people feel it is okay to cheat. I read through the book in one setting because I loved the voice of the author and the way she tackled a subject that has been written about many times. Nothing was tied up in a pretty little package and the reader was left to decide how they felt about the choices the characters made. The Cheating Curve was literary entertainment, pure and simple. I recommend it to all who love a page-turning, sometimes steamy contemporary novel.

Infidelity; do the rules change depending on who you are?

Best friends since elementary school; Aminah and Lang find themselves at a cross road of life. Aminah's value and ideas of infidelity differ so much from Langs. Aminah believes in "til death do us part", committment and monogamy. Meanwhile Lang believes she should have it all, the affair, her husband and her great career. The two agree to continue to love one another and leave the behavior. Outstanding storyline, fantastic research and knowledge on the issues of infidelity, marriage and monogamy.

Where's the Beef?

Because the author is African-American, I expected to pull something inspirational from this little ditty. However, I was remiss. To her credit, she was able to illustrate the warring perspectives of infidelity without bias. But I wasn't too thrilled with the ending. When reading fiction I'm half expecting a fairy tale ending or at the very least, one that's entertaining. She basically told us what we already knew about marital dynamics in the African American community. and I felt somewhat alienated by the settings in which she placed her main characters. They're living in the middle of New York enjoying all the riches but no rags. Really how does that build character? How does that relate to the average reader? We're not all making Diddy money and I think that the circumstance plays an integral part in the longevity of ones relationship.
