The Black Notebook, by Patrick Modiano

A writer's notebook becomes the key that unlocks memories of a love formed and lost in 1960s Paris.

In the aftermath of Algeria's war of independence, Paris was a city rife with suspicion and barely suppressed violence. Amid this tension, Jean, a young writer adrift, met and fell for Dannie, an enigmatic woman fleeing a troubled past. A half century later, with his old black notebook as a guide, he retraces this fateful period in his life, recounting how, through Dannie, he became mixed up with a group of unsavory characters connected by a shadowy crime. Soon Jean, too, was a person of interest to the detective pursuing their case--a detective who would prove instrumental in revealing Dannie's darkest secret. The Black Notebook bears all the hallmarks of this Nobel Prize–winning literary master's unsettling and intensely atmospheric style, rendered in English by acclaimed translator Mark Polizzotti (Suspended Sentences). Once again, Modiano invites us into his unique world, a Paris infused with melancholy, uncertain danger, and the fading echoes of lost love.

And yet, it was no dream. Sometimes I catch myself saying those words in the street, as if hearing someone else’s voice. A toneless voice. Names come back to me, certain faces, certain details. No one left to talk with about it. One or two witnesses must still be alive. But they’ve probably forgotten the whole thing. And in the end, I wonder if there really were any witnesses.
No, it wasn’t a dream. The proof is that I still have this black notebook full of my jottings. I need precise words in this haze, so I look in the dictionary. “Note: A short piece of writing that is used to help someone remember something.” The pages of my notebook contain a succession of names, phone numbers, appointments, and also short texts that might have something to do with literature. But what category should they be listed under? Private journal? Fragments of a memoir? And also hundreds of classified ads copied down from newspapers. Lost dogs. Furnished apartments. Help wanted and offered. Psychics.
Among those masses of notes, some have stronger resonance than others. Especially when nothing disturbs the silence. The telephone stopped ringing long ago. And no one will knock at the door. They must think I’m dead. You are alone, concentrating, as if trying to capture Morse code signals being sent from far away by an unknown correspondent. Naturally, many signals are garbled, and no matter how hard you strain your ears they are lost forever. But a few names stand out clearly in the silence and on the empty page . . .
Dannie, Paul Chastagnier, Aghamouri, Duwelz, Grard Marciano, “Georges,” the Unic Htel, Rue du Montparnasse . . . As I remember it, I always felt on my guard in that neighborhood. The other day, I happened to walk through it. I had a strange sensation. Not that time had passed, but that another me, a twin, was prowling around there, a me who hadn’t aged, and who was still living — down to the smallest detail, and until the end of time — through what I had experienced over a very short period.
What caused the unease I felt back then? Was it those few streets in the shadow of a railway station and a graveyard? Now they struck me as harmless. Their faades had changed color. Lighter. Nothing special. A neutral zone. Could I possibly have left behind a double, someone who would repeat each of my former movements, follow in my old footsteps, for all eternity? No, nothing remained of us here. Time had wiped the slate clean. The area was brand-new, sanitized, as if it had been rebuilt on the site of a condemned lot. And even though most of the buildings were still the same, they made you feel as if you were looking at a taxidermied dog, a dog you had once owned, that you had loved when it was alive.
That Sunday afternoon, on my walk, I tried to recall what was written in the black notebook, which I regretted not having with me. Times of appointments with Dannie. The telephone number of the Unic Htel. The names of the people I met there. Chastagnier, Duwelz, Grard Marciano. Aghamouri’s number at the Moroccan Pavilion at the Cit Universitaire. Short descriptions of different areas in that neighborhood, for a piece I planned to call “L’Arrire-Montparnasse,” until I discovered thirty years later that the title had already been used by a certain Oser Warszawski.
One late Sunday afternoon in October, then, my footsteps had led me to that neighborhood, which I would have avoided any other day of the week. No, it wasn’t really a pilgrimage. But Sundays, especially in late afternoon, if you are alone, open a breach in time. You need only slip into it. A stuffed dog that you loved when it was alive. The moment I walked past the large, dirty, white-and-beige building at 11 Rue d’Odessa — I was on the opposite sidewalk, the one on the right — I felt something click, the slight dizziness that seizes you whenever time splits open. I stood frozen, staring at the faades that enclosed the small courtyard. That was where Paul Chastagnier always used to park his car when he lived in a room at the Unic Htel, on Rue du Montparnasse. One evening, I had asked why he didn’t just leave the car in front of the hotel. He had given me a guilty half-smile and answered with a shrug, “As a precaution . . .”
A red Lancia. It could easily draw attention. But then, if he wanted to remain invisible, why on earth choose that color and make of car? Besides, he had said, a friend of his lived in this building on Rue d’Odessa and he often lent him the car. Yes, that’s why it was parked there.
“As a precaution,” he had said. I soon realized that this man, in his forties, dark-haired, always immaculately dressed in a gray suit and navy-blue overcoat, did not have any particular profession. I heard him make phone calls at the Unic Htel, but the wall was too thick for me to follow the conversation. Only the sound of his voice reached me: deep, sometimes sharp. Long pauses. I had gotten to know this Chastagnier at the Unic Htel, along with several others I met in the same establishment: Grard Marciano, Duwelz, whose first name I don’t recall . . . Their outlines have grown hazy with time, their voices inaudible. Paul Chastagnier stands out more clearly because of the colors: black hair, navy-blue overcoat, red car. I imagine he served time in prison, like Duwelz, and like Marciano. He was the oldest of the bunch, and he has surely died since then. He got up late and held his appointments far away from there, in the southern part of town, that hinterland around the old freight depot, where I, too, knew the local street names: Falguire, Alleray, and, a bit farther along, Rue des Favorites . . . Empty cafs that he sometimes took me to, where he probably thought no one could find him. I never dared ask if he was officially persona non grata in Paris, though the idea crossed my mind. But then, why would he park his red car in front of those cafs? Wouldn’t it have been more prudent, more discreet, just to walk? At the time, I often wandered around that neighborhood that they were beginning to tear down, past empty lots, squat buildings with bricked-in windows, sections of pavement showing through heaps of rubble, as if after a bombardment. And that red car parked there, its smell of leather, that vivid stain that brings back memories . . . Memories? No. That Sunday evening, I ended up convincing myself that time stands still, and that if I truly slipped into the breach I would find all of it there, intact. First and foremost, that red car. I decided to walk to Rue Vandamme. There was a caf there that Paul Chastagnier had brought me to, where our conversation had taken a more personal turn. I had even sensed he was on the verge of opening up to me. He had proposed, indirectly, that I “work” for him. I had remained evasive. He hadn’t insisted. I was very young but very distrustful. Later, I had gone back to that caf with Dannie.
That Sunday, it was almost dark by the time I arrived at Avenue du Maine, and I walked alongside the tall new buildings on the even-numbered side. They formed a rectilinear faade. Not a single light in the windows. No, it hadn’t been a dream. Rue Vandamme used to open off from the avenue at around that spot, but this evening the faades were smooth, compact, offering not the slightest vista. I had to face the facts: Rue Vandamme no longer existed.
I went through the glass door of one of those buildings at the approximate place where we used to turn onto Rue Vandamme. Fluorescent lights. A long, wide corridor lined with glass walls, behind which lay suites of offices. Perhaps a section of Rue Vandamme still remained, surrounded by the mass of new construction. The thought made me break into nervous laughter. I continued to follow the corridor with its glass doors. I couldn’t see the end of it and the fluorescents made me blink. I thought that maybe the corridor simply followed the former path of Rue Vandamme. I closed my eyes.

Noir Modernity: Don't believe what you see.
By Paraducks
Modiano and modernity, nothing changes and everything changes and when we are not certain what was, we can hardly be certain as to what is. The layers of an onion never stop.

too late the mystery
By Case Quarter
The Black Notebook is a compilation of scenes more in common with a sketch pad than the traditional mystery story. imagine the black letters on the page transformed into sketches in ink or charcoal of wet black streets at night, a car ride at night with the lights off, rooms with black curtains at windows, a man with a black briefcase.

these are scenes from the past of jean, a writer little of whom little is known. the past, itself is a black hole, accessible through his memory and, where his memory fails, he must rely on what he wrote in his notebook.

sadly lacking from jean’s memories is passion describing a romance or notes of unrequited love. as he recalls accompanying dannie, if that was her name, from place to place, he would write some incidental detail in his black notebook, the red lancia, the names on shop signs, even baudelaire’s mistress took up more space in his notebook than the woman of mystery at his side.

decades after his time with dannie, a chance encounter with a detective adds more detail to events surrounding his odd relationship with dannie, but not enough toward putting the story in order.

for the detective, the past is past, and for jean the events of the past appear to be diversions of memory of a lonely man searching for meaning in a past experience involving a woman while ignoring the black hole of a more total kind of forgetfulness, the oblivion of death.

modiano conveys the impression that the detective story has been done a thousand times before and isn’t worth doing again, that reader can assemble a story from the given sketches, by filling in the details, if the reader wants, that more important than a story is a mood, a sensibility of mysteries deeper than found in the past. modiano doesn’t quite make the journey to the metaphysical realm worthwhile.

A Noir Modiano--so what's new?
By Thomas F. Dillingham
Readers of Patrick Modiano's novels (I have read 12 of them) will become accustomed to encountering certain patterns in his narratives, as well as familiar character types, and the reaction of such readers may well depend on their tolerance for a writer's fascination with exploring subtle variations on those patterns: a narrator who tries to reconstruct his memories of past experiences, maybe having been prompted by an encounter with an object or person or place that triggers very partial, sometimes inaccurate memories that gradually are clarified, corrected, subverted, or otherwise changed as the narrator, often reluctantly, follows whatever clues may be uncovered to provide the "truth" about the past. In this case, with something of a "film noir" atmosphere that is also a familiar part of the range of patterns Modiano uses, the narrator has a notebook containing more or less random or fragmentary jottings from a period in his past when he was "involved" with a young woman and a group of more or less suspicious, possibly menacing, associates. The woman is reputed to have a dangerous past, having been implicated in an event or action of some kind that could not only put her in great danger, but would also endanger anyone closely associated with her.

Under the circumstances, the narrator slinks about in Paris during the earlier period of his association with her, but we are "in the present" with that same narrator, as he samples bits and pieces of the materials in the notebook--names, addresses, images of places, texts from signs or graffiti that he copied during his wanderings with the young woman, and so on. He returns to seek the places he has written about, to recollect the nature of the young woman. His quest provides much more confusion and uncertainty than he would like, but also forces him to recognize aspects of his own involvement and behavior that he might wish he had not remembered.

Modiano's narrator frequently throws indications of uncertainty, even outright questions about the possibility of knowing what has happened, as opposed to what might be false memories or even fantasies, and his character keeps returning to the question--did this, could this, have happened. And one of the unsettling answers to this question is "For me, there never has been a present or a past. Everything blends together, as in that empty room where, every night, a light shines." Earlier, he refers to "the slight dizziness that seizes you whenever time splits open," and later, as he observes two men looking out a window toward where he is standing, but they do not see him: "Perhaps the glass was opaque from inside, like a one-way mirror. Or else, very simply, dozens and dozens of years stood between us; they remained frozen in the past, in the middle of that hotel lobby and we no longer lived, they and I, in the same space of time."

It is that kind of disruption of assumptions about "reality," about whether we are in a dream or merely imagining a scene that may have happened, but that is not "real" now, that Modiano often develops to send the reader into deeper questions about the nature of identity (very fluid from the narrator's point of view) and even the existence of certainly about where one is. This narrator's notebook, for example, leads him to seek places in Paris where he has lived or visited friends or regularly stopped for a coffee or meal, only to find that the places he "remembers" have been obliterated, with shiny new multistory buildings constructed in their places. This is not an uncommon experience for walkers in modern cities, of course, but the narrator's commitment to finding the "original" and to exploring even much older associations (he regularly refers to places where Baudelaire and his mistress had lived, for example), constantly raises the questions about the nature of memory, of time past, of the ways in which solidity and fluidity oscillate and invade each others spaces. And, as one of the other characters says to the narrator, Jean, "In the end, you can never play both sides," and the issue is both one of memory and of experience, of physical presence or absence, or of morality.

Modiano's novels are sometimes criticized for being so often very similar to others--even to the extent of certain characters from one novel reappearing in a later narrative, if only fleetingly. I can understand the frustration this causes, but for me, it is part of the fascination, and I will continue to read Modiano whenever there is a new work (or even the impulse to re-read an old one), with fascination and pleasure.

From Publishers Weekly
In this paean to the Friars Club Berle reminisces about his high times at the 80-year-old theatrical hangout and its branch in Beverly Hills, opened during the 1950s. In 1920, Eddie Cantor introduced Berle, a vaudeville tyro aged 12, to the Friars, where he met oldtime greats like Al Jolson, Joe E. Lewis and Fred Allen and later made friends with newcomers Sinatra, Dean Martin and others. There are spicy stories of gangsters who backed plays, night spots and entertainers. Bringing history up to date, Berle announces that the Friars now accept women as members. The book is crammed with boffo one-liners as delivered by genuine wits the comedian has known, very funny material if often salacious. The superabundance of knee-slappers, however, dulls the edges. Perhaps Berle has forgotten that a comic should "always leave them laughing," not overwhelmed. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
A stitched together group of sketches and reminiscences by a top comedian. The book is based loosely on Berle's experiences in the Friar's Club, to which almost every famed entertainer has belonged. There are scattered glimpses of assorted stars such as Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, etc., including just about every stand-up comic who ever lived. The book tries to develop a feeling for some of them, but too many are included because of the jokes about and by them. Basically a collection of one-liners, some funny but many of them incredibly tasteless. Not recommended. Samuel Simons, Memorial Hall Lib., Andover, Mass.

Arlene Wilson's Review Is Misguided
By Amazon Customer
Arlene Wilson gave this book a terrible review and all of her points for doing so are misguided for a few reasons, First, Arlene does not understand that this is not a general survey text for an introduction class in philosophy. This text is specific to epistemology. Secondly, Wilson does not understand that this book is an anthology of papers written by philosophers dating back to the ancients. That being said, this is not an instructional textbook. It is a reader and the authors do a great job of presenting an overview of the major ideas contained in each section. The instruction she seeks is supposed to come from someone trained in philosophy. It is possible to learn from the papers contained in the text, but only under the presupposition that one has already studied somewhat extensively in philosophy; otherwise, confusion, such as that experienced by Wilson is sure to follow.

I am a professor at City College of San Francisco, and I use this text for my class PHIL4: Knowledge because it contains all of the major historical treatises on epistemology and many seminal contemporary works. Furthermore, the book is organized in such a way that there are often main articles and responses to those articles. For example, the Gettier paper on the insufficiency of the JTB account of knowledge includes two enlightening responses. Lastly, all of the papers in the text are fairly non-technical. In other words, one does not need knowledge of advanced predicate calculus to understand the content, so intro students can grasp what's at stake with each topic, with the guidance of an instructor, of course.

Too complex
By Amazon Customer
While marketing is a complex subject, the authors are so caught up in the sounds of their academic prose. It assumes you remember concepts from previous chapters and does not do a good job of explaining important marketing concepts.

It is very dry reading. The case studies are old even as of the print date.

This book is so complex, that it is the first text book I have read that requires you to read all the side bar information.

Unfortunately this book was chosen by a professor who is no longer teaching the class in my school's MBA program. The new teacher also feels the text book is way too complex to get much out of it. I expect material to be something I can understand, not "geek" speak!

Waste of time and money
By kia
I had to purchase this book for my marketing strategy course in business school. It is not practical. you can read pages and pages but learn nothing simply because it doesnt teach anything. It doesnt teach anything about theories as well. For example many pages are written about importance of segmentation but doesnt say what is the best strategy for segmentation.
It is waste of money.

Good reference textbook, not easy to read.
By BBMoreB
I purchased this book for my Customer and Competitive advantage class. I was able to save money by buying this paperback international edition. It is the same as the hardback one that my classmates purchased. This is not a book that you can read cover-to-cover. It has a good index that makes searching easier. The cases studies are outdated but it makes a good reference text.

Iris Sullivan worked hard for many years for her medical degree. When she finally obtained it, no one would hire her simply because she was a woman. The town of Nowhere, Texas was the only place she could find work in her field, so she made the move with her companion Edna Petunia Blue, fully expecting to spend the rest of her life as a spinster. When Francis Harvey walked into her office shortly after her arrival, she was surprised at the feelings he inspired.

Francis Harvey had lost his wife of seven years in childbirth and was doing his very best to raise his three daughters on his own. When his eldest broke her arm, he rushed to town for the new doctor, not anticipating what he would find. When he saw a female doctor, he immediately assumed she was a midwife and the town had made a mistake hiring her. He couldn't help but be fascinated by the blond beauty. Could he convince her that he cared about her and not just having a mother for his children? Or would they forever remain alone?

Iris and Edna Petunia - a delightful duo worth reading about
By C Patterson
Once again, Kirsten Osbourne weaves her writing web to draw us closer to Iris, the eighth flower siste of Seattle. Iris is now a doctor in Nowhere, Texas, and fighting to make her way in the medical world. Francis Harvey is a widower with three delightful children and is willing to accept a female doctor to fix the pain of his daughter's broken arm. Edna Petunia Blue is back as Iris's nurse/companion and certainly hasn't aged (or matured) a bit. This book is a delightful end to the Suitors of Seattle - or is it? As the informally adopted sister, I believe Edna Petunia has a story of her own coming up to delight the readers of this series with a finale worth talking about in reading circles everywhere.

Bittersweet
By Leona
Reading Iris was bittersweet. The Suitors of Seattle from book one to this one gave us a glimpse of the Sullivan girls as they grow into women. We meet the men they all grew to love. Francis from Nowhere Texas has always been a favorite of Mrs. Osbourne readers, so it was rewarding to see him end up with the strong independent Iris. Mrs. Osbourne has made characters that you love and wish to always be in their lives. She has put together a bouquet that will forever bloom for readers and Iris is not the last to bloom from the Sullivan clan. Five stars and a hankie for Iris.

Never a Better Flower as Iris!
By Kristen L.
This is the eighth book in the Suitors in Seattle Series. It is a spin off from the Bride of Beckham Series by Kirsten Osbourne. Iris is the last Flower of Mr. And Mrs. Sullivan. She is a doctor, who, moves to Nowhere, Texas in order to start a practice. She falls in love with one of her first patient's father. Mrs. Sullivan had asked Iris to be engaged a minimum of six months (a request she has given all her Flowers), so that she may plan a wedding. Iris acted in true "Flower Form".

If you have never read some any of the Suitors of Seattle Series, I suggest you start with ROSE, the oldest Flower of the bunch, and work your way thru all eight Flowers. But you can read this as a stand alone book. But I do believe you will want to read about the rest of the Flowers. If you love Historical Western Romance, you'll love anything written by Kirsten Osbourne! She has another novel in this series coming out called EDNA PETUNIA, which will be out in about a week or so. It makes sad that the series is almost over but Kirsten tells us that she other novels/series in the works. I can't wait for the next series the Kirsten writes. All I know is that it will be awesome, no matter the name of the series, where it's located and how many books are in the series.

From Library Journal
Eminent historians Farber (Age of Great Dreams) and Bailey (Sex in the Heartland) present an accessible, state-of-the-art overview of the turbulent Sixties. Part narrative history and interpretation, part almanac, chronology, and glossary, the book offers an introspective yet entertaining investigation for those who remember the age as well as for those just being introduced to it. The most stimulating chapter includes essays by contributing scholars who assess the legacies of the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, the New Left, the women's movement, and the sexual revolution. An excellent glossary, which includes one-paragraph to one-page views of well-known political leaders and such cultural icons as Twiggy, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and Janis Joplin, bolsters Farber's somewhat sketchy historical summary. In turn, short essays that discuss such topics as the environmental movement, significant legal cases, and religion enhance the glossary. The book concludes with a chronology, demographics, and a comprehensive annotated bibliography, which is noted more for its inclusiveness than the substance of the annotations. One small weakness in this seven-part book is that the affiliations and publications of the secondary contributors are not identified. For another collection of interpretative essays on the Sixties, see Alexander Bloom's Long Time Gone (Oxford Univ., 2001). Highly recommended for academic and public libraries. From Booklist
It's hard to imagine a more useful multifunction library resource than this latest entry in the Columbia Guide series, which previously issued studies of the cold war and American women in the nineteenth century. University of New Mexico historian Farber and sex-and-courtship researcher Beth Bailey open with a 75-page overview of the 1960s. In part 2 (roughly 100 pages), nine authors summarize the historiography of 10 political, social, and cultural issues. Part 3 is an A-to-Z glossary of key people and organizations; unlikely neighbors here include radical feminist Kate Millet and the military-industrial complex, Twiggy and transcendental meditation. Part 4 supplies brief essays on eight general topics, such as environmentalism, religion, and sports in the 1960s. Part 5 is a cross between an almanac and the Statistical Abstract, capturing fascinating facts, trends, and demographics of the era. Part 6 offers a 1960s chronology (including the years when significant consumer products were introduced); part 7 is a valuable annotated bibliography. Everyone from "the Greatest Generation" to that generation's great-grandchildren can learn something here. Mary Carroll

(Karl Helicher Library Journal)

This book is a fine addition to any library's collection, so good that faculty may want their students to purchase a copy. If other volumes in the series are half so impressive, libraries may want the series on standing order.

There are many books written about the United States during the 1960s; none are quite like this one.The Columbia Guide to America in the 1960s is a multi-purpose book.

Comprehensive Purview Of the Fascinating 1960s!
By Barron Laycock
Aging baby-boomers like myself can rest more easily; herein one discovers a wonderful effort, which succeeds marvelously in accurately and faithfully recounting and retelling the somewhat convoluted and always multi-currented tenor of the times for the 1960s. Given the massive neo-conservative effort to discredit the theoretical positions and social ethos of the sixties generation, it is terrific to have such a carefully researched and meticulously documented effort as is "The Columbia Guide To America In The 1960s" to give greater voice and renewed verve and credibility to the ideas and theoretical positions that arose from the ongoing new-left critique of mainstream society that emanated from the events of that storied decade. Authors David Farber and Beth Bailey are both academics with considerable expertise in the area of contemporary 20th century history, and this aplomb with the facts and the sense of the times is fascinating to plow through on both an intellectual and also an emotional level. This is scholarship well done!
It does one well to remember that the sixties decade and what came out of it are both subjects of serious disagreements as well as continuing controversy, given the attempt by the right wing to define the ideas stemming from those times as bogus and discredited. Therefore, making sense of all that is brought back to the surface in this book represents a considerable effort, but it is hard to deny such an effort to make sense of a time with so many crosscurrents and so much social, cultural, and political turbulence is well worth the effort. Therefore, the book is organized around several different perspectives and approaches. In the first section, we are presented with a well-developed and intricately organized narrative that superbly covers the waterfront of the era's most significant events, policies, and changes. The second part of the book is organized around ten different essay efforts by well-regarded contemporary historians on various salient aspects of the decade, ranging from the counterculture, the civil rights movement, the sexual revolution, and of course, the war in Vietnam.
The net effect of the combined first and second sections is to give us a much more comprehensive and detailed understanding of both the issues and events on the one hand, and how they fit into the mosaic of the sixties, on the other hand. Subsequent section also add to the overall contribution of the book, by giving us shorter essays on other aspects of the era, subjects of particualr interest to each of the authors, and a terrific extended bibliography for those of us interested in further exploring the eddies and currents of various aspects of the decade in question. It fairly well smashes revisionist interpretations of the era into smithereens by exposing them for the solipsistic efforts at refashioning the truth that they are, and does so while educating and entertaining us on an number of levels at one. This is a great book, and one I can recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the most fascinating decade of the 20th century. Enjoy!

Excellent Survey of a Most Eventful Decade
By David Valentino
Whether you lived through it, grew up in it, are studying it, or are simply curious about what your grandparents and parents were up to, you'll find no more comprehensive and thoughtful compendium to the 1960s.

Farber and Bailey divide the book into sections that each serve to give you a thorough understanding of the major issues of the time.

They begin with a very brief history of the decade and then move on to longer essays delineating the decade's hot buttons. These include John Kennedy's election and leadership up to his assassination; the civil rights movement, encompassing its origins, the protests, and the resulting civil rights laws; The Great Society, along with civil rights legislation, the centerpiece of Lyndon Johnson's domestic policy; the Vietnam War, from origins that predated U.S. involvement to its end under Richard Nixon; the polarization of society during the decade, something that still stands out in the minds of these who lived through the 1960s; the culture of the Sixties, including youth and African-American movements; and the change that came with the election of Nixon, as well as a brief recounting of the Watergate break in and its effect on the American psyche.

Next, they provide a series of articles, the majority contributed, that cover critical topics and that outline the scholarly interpretation of events. You'll find the evolution of interpretations particularly enlightening, as well as what the authors, historians, and journalists they review view as the lasting effects of: the upheaval of Jim Crow and the civil rights struggle; the nature of the new left; the ongoing results of The Great Society; the meaning and results of urban uprisings; the contentious issues still surrounding the Vietnam War and affecting policy to this day; what the women's movement and sexual revolution meant and means for people of different economic groups; an exploration of the famous counterculture; the political conservatism of the times and the Silent Majority.

Should you require clarification on terms, events, and people, from Bella Abzug to ZPG, you'll find answers in pages of encyclopedia-like explanations. Short essays on cities and suburbs, environmentalism, law and justice, popular music, religion, science and technology, sports, and art, follow.

Statistics can paint an interesting picture of a nation and so the authors produce pages of them on everything from population, to income, to election results, to popular movies, to the Vietnam War, to sports, and much more, enough to transform you into a quiz show champ.

For those wishing to explore any of the many topics covered in greater detail, the authors, and contributors, footnote carefully, as well as provide extensive bibliographic information at the end of essays and in the back of the book.

What sets this guide apart from others, in addition to its comprehensiveness, is its scholarship. In and of itself, it gives you a superior working knowledge of the 1960s and the various ways people interpret them and their influence on all that followed. And it leads you to even more in-depth analyses, should you like to explore the subjects more deeply.

Finally, no era occurs in isolation. As you'll see, the Fifties laid the groundwork for much of what followed in the Sixties. You'll find The Fifties: The Way We Really Were, an excellent history of the 1950s, not a paean to or nostalgic romp through those years, but an intriguing exploration of every aspect of American life during a decade many perceive as a golden age.
