About the Author
Lewis Grassic Gibbon (James Leslie Mitchell) was one of the finest writers of the twentieth century. Born in Aberdeenshire in 1901, he died at the age of thirty-four. He was a prolific writer of novels, short stories, essays and science fiction, and his writing reflected his wide interest in religion, archaeology, history, politics and science.

A Scottish Revelation

This is one of my favorite books. Though written by a man, it presents a woman's point of view in a harsh rural setting in Scotland at the turn of the century. Some people might find it tedious to wade through the first chapter because it presents the history of a town since the dawn of civilization: it setting, legends, and characters. I found it fascinating because it gave me the feeling, when the contemporary story began, that I had grown up in the area and knew the background on all of the characters that cross the main character's path. The main character is Chris, a young teenage woman who experiences her family's move to the countryside around Aberdeen, Scotland. Her vivid descriptions of the landscape, the people she encounters, and her family make this an uncommon story of a young woman's spirit and experience. Because Chris has experienced some education and excelled in her studies, her manner of speaking alternates between proper English and the rural dialect of the region, giving the reader a sense of what was happening throughout Scotland's countryside at the time: the intrusion of modernity into ancient rhythms and rural, isolated ways of being. Harsh, glorious, and heartbreaking, the story took me inside of Chris--her heart and mind. She is part of my memory now as though I had really known her and the contradictions of family life in rural Scotland more than 100 years ago.

Well worth the read

This is a classic of Scottish literature. The first novel is likely the most read, but the other two follow main characters through several decades of their lives. It is definitely a good read for anyone interested in the social history of Scotland's rural population in the early 20th century. The trilogy shows how all the social, political and economic factors of the times affected the poor. Too often, we only read/see how such factors affected the wealthy, e.g. the characters in Downton Abbey. So, the trilogy gives the reader a more rounded sense of what it was like to live through these times. The attempt to replicate rural dialects can be charming, but members of my book club whose first language is not English, found the language to be hard work.

The beginning of this book moves very slowly through the history of a small Scottish village. One you get through that, the story gets more and more intriguing. The characters are very well developed and the story draws you in as if you were living it. Martin McDonagh's first play The Beauty Queen of Leenane was nominated for six Tony awards, of which it won four, and the Laurence Olivier Award. McDonagh Taps the Absurist Tradition

"The Lonesome West" is early Martin McDonagh about the forlorn west of Ireland where according to the author the inhabitants tend to be isolated, insular, slow-witted, barely civilized, violent, and dangerously unneighborly. Remember hearing about the theater of the absurd, the theater of the ridiculous and the theater of cruelty? Here we see it taking on a new life and veering off in a loony, kookie, and gory direction. "In Bruges" shows you later but barely less than barbaric McDonagh. Frequent outbreaks of black comedy, burlesque, farce, and shock and awe emerge.
His characters are drinking the local hootch--poteen. None of the play's inmates can remember whether the local priest is Father Walsh or Welsh, but spiritually he's of no consequence anyway. The only bright lights in McDonagh's plays seem to be good-looking, quite young local lasses who are fiercely independent and don't mind killing things.
The priest has a crisis of faith (did he have any to begin with?) and a tendency to drink too much. McDonagh seems to feed on Irish stereotypes. Two brothers, both dimwits, living together are constantly feuding. One brother has offed his old man for a trivial slight. The other brother keeps silent about it but only because his sibling has signed all the family property over to him.
They are screwball characters: two of the three stooges, Abbot and Costello, Laurel and Hardy in their dialogue riffs. You're on a merry-go-round of illogical talk absurdist dialogue. The brothers in this play fight over nonsensical stuff, partly because both are dumbbells.
What is the meaning of it all? It's like Pinter's Homecoming but more violent and goofy, but with less significance and artistry. Pinter digs deeper, is a bottom fisher: McDonagh feeds closer to the surface.
The younger brother, Coleman, is flippant, irreverent toward the priest. The characters in general are impious, disrespectful with an irreligious attitude toward faith. Between the brothers, Coleman and Valene, there's pent-up violence. It's a village with a sick group of inhabitants. Cats have more value than people.
People in a McDonagh play apologize, but they never really mean it. Right after a faux apology they throw more fat on the fire in an orgy of self-destruction. Bad facts and secrets come out in the dialogue. The brothers give a litany of bad, hateful stuff they've done to each other which increases their mutual hatred for each other.
Brothers in a McDonagh play like the brothers in "Pillowman" seem to deliberately destroy their own kin by their actions.
There is violence and cruelty as nasty people take revenge. Should we worry about these numbskulls, even feel concerned? It's such fun to watch them going at it. And isn't that McDonagh's purpose making us laugh and feel uneasy all at the same time?

We were impressed with The Beauty Queen of Leanane. We saw the play at two separate venues years apart with different actors. We believe this was his finest work. We like this play, but quite frankly, we haven't taken the time to review it yet.

Chapter 1 is Molter Salt Reactor Technology and worth the cost of the book

After the front page is a quotation from Mr. David Le Blanc: `The molten salt reactor technology: "Too good to leave on the shelf".

The book is arranged in four chapters, with chapter one describing the technology, and chapter 2 "Heat Transfer in MSRs" Chapter 3 is "Assessment of MSR Thermo-Hydronamics and Newtronics" and chapter 4 "Multi-Physics Modeling Approach".

Chapter 1 is titled "Molten Salt Reactor Technology" and would make an excellent stand alone book. It covers a brief history going back into the 1940s when it was part of a U S program to develop a nuclear powered airplane. Single fluid and two fluid reactors are addressed. A plant layout for a single fluid Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (MSBR) is shown. A MSRE flow diagram is given. A figure showing a schematic representation of a graphite moderated Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is provided. The issue of safety is addressed. Four different fuel cycles: Actinide burning, Once-through fuel cycle, denatured thorium- U233 breeder cycle and thorium - U233 breeder cycle are addressed. Salts are addressed including lithium and beryllium fluoride salts, and their characteristics in comparison the lead, sodium, helium and water are addressed. Primary loop structural components are addressed. Advantages and drawbacks of the MSR technology is addressed in a short table (2) Table 7 provides a chart of radiotoxicity due to MSBR actinide wastes compared to other fuel cycles. Different concepts of MSRs are addressed including, thermal-spectrum breeders, fast- spectrum breeders, fast- spectrum incinerators, thermal - spectrum incinerators, sub - critical incinerators and Chlorine - salt MSRs. There are a number of excellent tables and graphics illustrating the chapter.

I consider chapter 1 as very informative regarding the state of MSRs and what they can offer for the future. Anyone interested in MSRs will find chapter 1 interesting and a good read. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 are or interest to the MSR designer.

Useful information, but badly edited

If you're looking to get a good base of knowledge about performance testing in a practical way, this book will do it. You'll learn basics about tools, reporting, and methodology. You'll also learn about the various ways software handles processing tasks, and thus be able to point out the most likely points of failure for any given software application.

However, this is a rough book. It has a lot of spelling errors, a lot of confusion between your/you're, and a lot of grammar errors. It feels like the book was written in a train of thought, and then never passed to an editor before publishing.

That said, I don't regret the purchase or time spent reading it, but if you can't get over spelling errors you might want to look elsewhere.

The book has some good parts, but the spelling, grammar and syntax in general are just terrible. Editing is poor to non-existent, and it makes this book feel very amateur, almost blog-like.

About the Author
Will Beemer is a founding member of the Timber Framers Guild�and served as Co-Executive Director for 11 years. He’s been a builder for over 40 years and an educator in the building trades for 30 of those. With his wife, Michele, he owns and operates the Heartwood School for the Homebuilding Crafts in Washington, Massachusetts, which has been teaching courses in timber framing, home building and other trades since 1978. Beemer has taught timber framing around the world, including in Patagonia (with Rocky Mountain Workshops), at Palomar College in California, at North House Folk School in Minnesota, and through numerous Guild workshops and projects. He has authored many articles on basic and advanced timber framing techniques and is a regular contributor to Timber Framing (the quarterly journal of the Guild) and�Fine Homebuilding�and has also written for Wood Design & Building and Joiner’s Quarterly.

Jack A. Sobon is a self-employed architect and builder of timber-framed structures. He holds a bachelor of architecture degree from the Rhode Island School of design and has worked on barn moving and restoration. Together with Roger Schroeder, Sobon co-wrote Build a Classic Timber-Framed House, which is now in its twelfth printing, with nearly 50,000 copies in print.

Really fabulous and easy to understand

What a very easy to understand and well illustrated book on building a timber frame. I am but a humble woman, with a little experience in woodwork, but I marvel at the workmanship that is explained in this book - no easy screw and nail joins here, but proper mortise, tenons, dovetail and other joins. This building is a work of art, and will probably withstand whatever weather is thrown at it. It is lovely to see craftsmanship such as this passed on to the next generation - yes it takes longer, yes it requires patience but the end result is fabulous.
This book was supplied to me in return for a honest and unbiased review.

Beautiful and well written.

This was a really excellent book. I liked that it went into all the necessary detail to construct a small timber framed building and even provided variations on the base model for additional space or other considerations (such as storage for a large tractor).

The approach to the book is very straightforward and I found all the diagrams helpful in describing some of the complexities of the craft.

It was also nice to learn about different approaches to timber framing, most specifically "square rule", and how that works. It was also helpful to learn about the alternatives and to understand why they adopt the square rule approach in this book.

Overall it is a beautiful well written book well worth the money. I would recommend it.
