Book Review: The Au Pair

This was the first novel that I had read by Janey Fraser and I came to find that she really does have a talent for writing several unique and witty characters. I have always admired authors like Janey who can write several different story lines into one book and still be able to manage them all. This book is filled with action, love, and heartbreak. Janey writes about several households who are harboring foreign au pairs to help take care of their children. I loved all of the au pairs and how versatile each one was. Being an American myself, I am always fascinated with foreign countries as well as their languages and traditions. One au pair was from France, another Bulgaria, and even one from Norway. The language barrier added a comical pretense to the book as well. I did have a hard time at first keeping up with all of the different characters. You really have to pay attention at first, but after that you can start to get the hang of things.

I had two favorite characters in this book. The first was Marie-France who was an au pair. Marie-France is a daring girl who came to Corrywood not just to be an au pair, but to also find the father that she never knew as a child. I often felt sorry for Marie-France and especially when she first came to be an au pair because Dawn, the lady she was employed by, was not a very nice person. Marie-France was in a strange place and struggling with the language so my heart often went out to her. She was a girl who simply wanted answers about her past. I just wish that more of the story would have focused on her because she was such a well-written character and one that any reader would take an immediate liking to.

My next favorite character was Jilly who actually started the au pair agency. Jilly was a stay at home mom whose husband had recently be demoted in his job and money was becoming scarce in their household. Jilly was the mother of three boys and she worked so hard to be the best mom that she could be. She started the au pair agency in order to both earn money and to be able to stay at home with her boys where she knew she needed to be. She put herself on the line for the well-being of her children and this, of course, is what any good mother should and would do. Not to mention her boys were wild and often breaking things and they were one of the most humorous things about the story. I can always admire characters like Jilly who really have to struggle and can still come out on top!

I have always wondered what it would be like be a Nanny or an Au Pair and I have often thought about it trying it while I am finishing up my college years. After reading this book I gained a whole new and developed respect for anyone who is a Nanny or an Au Pair. It takes such patience to work with other people's children and especially to live with them in their home. These Au Pairs are asked to pick up and move to a foreign country and adjust their lives to fit the schedules and tendencies of another family. At times I did not like the jumping around of families and trying to keep up with all of the characters but there were certain times that I was so into the story that it did not bother me. At almost 600 pages it was a lot to take in but in the end proved to be worth it! A well written story with quite a lot of thought behind it!

Another great read from the author

I started this book immediately after finishing The Playgroup and I enjoyed it just as much.

I work in the childcare industry and couldn't wait to get stuck into this one. It shows the bad and good sides of the au pair industry. I say industry because that is exactly what it is. Reading this it seemed like there was such a high turnover of young girls in some jobs, and I know that this is what does happen at times in real life.

There are some hilarious situations the characters find themselves in which are all written brilliantly. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the various family units and how the au pairs fitted in, or didn't, into the family units.

Great Holiday Read

The Au Pair was a page turning easy read, just the sort of thing you need when you want to relax and not have to work too hard with a book. The characters are well interwoven and some will get your heckles up while others will have you wanting to look after them.

Scarily realistic about the world of au pairs too! I'm guessing a few people have shared some au pair related home truths with the author. This is all about character and plot and a fun read, but I can tell Janey Fraser has done her research. If you are thinking about being / having an au pair, be sure to read this first. It is better than any 'how to deal with (being) an au pair' guidebook!

A Surprisingly Successful “Inept” Emperor

'Although Theodosius II (r. 408-450) is not generally regarded as one of the better Roman emperors, the essays in this work collectively argue that History has been a little hard on him, given that he became sole emperor at age 7. The book consists of an introduction and ten essays by several specialists in the Late Empire. One important point made in Theodosius’ favor is that he did manage to keep his throne, and his head, longer than any other emperor, and in particularly tumultuous times. Initially under the regency of his rather older sister Pulcheria, and later aided by several excellent advisors and commanders, he helped keep the Eastern Empire going, while lending some aid to the beset Western Empire, patronizing learning and the arts, and ordering the codification of the laws, while trying to keep a lid on theological disputes. He even had some success in several wars, albeit that he wisely never took to the field himself. The essays cover all these facets of his reign. In addition, we get a look at his style of rule and some insights about his personality, which seems rather less formal than customary for emperors. There are also useful profiles of his “supporting cast,” notably Pulcheria and Marcian, the soldier who would marry her to succeed Theodosius. This is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in the Late Empire.'

Not so weak after all.

Theodosius II was the longest reigning Eastern Roman Emperor (from 408 to 450 AD). Born in 401 as the only son of Emperor Arcadius and his Frankish-born wife Aelia Eudoxia, he already was proclaimed co-Augustus by his father in January AD 402. In 408, his father died and the seven-year-old boy became Emperor of the Eastern half of the Roman Empire. In 414, Theodosius' older sister Pulcheria was proclaimed Augusta and assumed the regency. By 416 Theodosius was declared Augustus in his own right and the regency ended, but his sister remained a strong influence on him.
For the next forty-two years (408– 450), Theodosius was largely confined to Constantinople: he never saw most of the empire over which he ruled; he never fought on campaign; he never commanded troops in the field. The claim of a significant weakening in imperial authority is sharpened by comparison between Theodosius II and his imperial grandfather, Theodosius I.
Contemprary and modern scholars consider him as a monarch pushed around by his eldest sister, the Empress Pulcheria, who as a teenager publicly proclaimed her perpetual virginity. Even contemporaries were struck by the piety of the imperial court, which was said to resemble a monastery, Theodosius and his three sisters rising early each morning to pray together and fasting twice a week.
In 425, Theodosius founded the University of Constantinople and in 429, he appointed a commission to collect all of the laws since the reign of Constantine I, published as the Codex Theodosianus in 438. This law code formed a basis for the law code of Emperor Justinian I, the Corpus Juris Civilis, in the following century.
Being a deep religious emperor, Theodosius II had to deal with a significant theological dispute. In 428 Theodosius appointed the monk Nestorius as Archbishop of Constantinople since 428. Nestorius quickly became involved in the disputes of two theological factions, which differed in their Christology. Nestorius tried to find a middle ground between those who, emphasizing the fact that in Christ God had been born as a man, insisted on calling the Virgin Mary - Theotokos ("birth-giver of God"), and those who rejected that title because God, as an eternal being, could not have been born. Nestorius suggested the title Christotokos ("birth-giver of Christ") as a compromise, but it did not find acceptance with either faction. He was accused of separating Christ's divine and human natures, resulting in "two Christs", a heresy later called Nestorianism. Though initially supported by the emperor, Nestorius found a forceful opponent in Archbishop Cyril of Alexandria.
In 431 the emperor called a council, which convened in Ephesus. The story of the first Council of Ephesus is conventionally told as one of a contest between two main protagonists: the bishops of Alexandria and Constantinople, Cyril and Nestorius. The council affirmed the Nicene Creed (325) and the title Theotokos ("Birth-giver to God", "God-bearer", "Mother of God”) and condemned Nestorius, who returned to his monastery in Syria and was eventually exiled to a remote monastery in Egypt.
Almost twenty years later, the theological dispute broke out again. Another Council was convoked in Ephesus in 449, later deemed a "robber synod" by Pope Leo I because of its tumultuous circumstances. Leo of Rome and many other bishops protested against the outcome, but the emperor supported it. Only after his death in 451 would the decisions be reversed at the Council of Chalcedon.
Theodosius II’s reign was also framed by literary giants. The closing decades of the fourth century saw the deaths of two: Libanius (314– c. 393) and Gregory of Nazianzus (329– 389), the former based in Antioch, staunchly pagan and allied to the Hellenic tradition of the schools, a teacher, practicing orator and voluminous letter-writer, Gregory an equally prolific Christian Hellenist, educated at Athens, briefly bishop of Constantinople before retiring to his native Cappadocia.
In conclusion we can say that the authors of this book point out that - although often dismissed as mediocre and ineffectual – Theodosius II ruled an empire - aided by several excellent advisors and commanders –, which retained its vitality and integrity while the West was broken up by barbarian invasions. The ecclesiastical, legislative, literary and cultural vitality of his reign was impressive and he left a strong, although religious divided, Eastern Roman Empire for his successors.

Backtrack 5 - Testing Wireless Secuirty

One of my favorite penetration tests is the wireless assessment. Backtrack 5 - Testing Wireless Security builds upon another of Packt's books BackTrack 5 Wireless Penetration Testing Beginners Guide in going a little more in depth of wireless penetration techniques. The book is short, sweet, and to the point at a commanding 108 pages and about 5 chapters (2 on setup, 2 on discovery/exploitation, and 1 on ensuring you're adhering to best practices for securing your network)

As a command line fanboy, one thing I wish this book covered more of was the use of the Aircrack-NG suite of tools from the command line. While there are some GUI tools out there (and this book covers them), I would still recommend that users get familiar with these tools as they are still the best in this space.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to someone new to wireless assessments.

Light and subtle

The milliners advertising used to say "to get ahead, get a hat". They would very much approve of this book. Daniel Mercier is a Mr Average - or perhaps a Monsieur Mediocre. He's a lowly accountant until one evening he finds himself dining next to French President, Fran�ois Mitterrand, who leaves the restaurant without his hat. When Daniel decides to keep it, his life starts to change and he feels somehow more confident. In other strands of the story, Fanny Marquant is having an affair with an older man who clearly has no intention of leaving his wife while celebrated perfumer Pierre Aslan has lost his ability to detect smells and to create perfumes. Bernard Lavalli�re, meanwhile is struggling to live up to the right wing standards of his wife's friends and starts to read the more left wing papers. At some point, all will come into contact with the President's hat and it will have an impact on all of them.

Antioine Laurain's short novel, is a delight. It's as light and subtle as a souffl� and is both wryly amusing and entertaining. The first three of the story's threads in particular are excellently worked and when they come together they are both funny and thoughtful. The Lavalli�rre thread worked less successfully for me but then that is perhaps because it rather stands alone from the other three.

Behind Laurain's humour though is a subtle look at what Mitterrand brought to France and the reaction of the wealthy to his socialist values. The hat stands for the good intentions that he brought and suggests that as much as anything what he sought was a change in attitudes. But while there is depth to the narrative, first and foremost it is superbly entertaining. It is hard to imagine a British author evoking such fortune from, say Margaret Thatcher's handbag.

For those who like to imagine Paris as full of swanky restaurants, arrogant men, style and illicit affairs, you will not be disappointed, yet it achieves this without appearing too clich�.

The main sadness about the book is that it is just so short. It's the type of book that you can easily read on a decent length train journey. Just make sure you check the luggage rack for left hats before you leave the carriage.

A Feel-Good Fable

Antoine Laurain's novel, The President's Hat (translated by Gallic Books) was originally published in France in 2012 as Le Chapeau de Mitterrand. The premise of this whimsical little novel is that the French president's (the novel is set in the 1980s) hat has some special powers of its own that will change, for the better, the life of anyone who owns it - no matter how briefly their period of ownership turns out to be.

And, luckily for a handful of Parisians, Mitterrand is forgetful enough about the whereabouts of his chapeau to set off a chain of events that will forever change their lives by allowing them to blossom into just the kind of people they have always wanted to be.

One evening, Daniel Mercier is a bit shocked to find himself dining alone within an arms-length of the French president and two of his associates. But he is even more surprised to discover that Mitterrand fails to take his hat with him when the men leave the restaurant. He surprises himself one more time when he manages to snag the hat and leave the restaurant with it as if it belonged to him and not to the president. From the beginning, Daniel feels the hat's power but he is no better at keeping track of it than Mitterrand, and soon enough, the hat ends up in the hands of several other people whose own lives need a little bit of a positive boost.

Antoine Laurain deftly combines the real world with the more magical one in a way that leaves the reader wishing for a magic hat of his own. The President's Hat works well as a feel-good fable but by the time the hat has changed hands a few times, it does begin to be a little predictable. There is nothing very deep here, but anyone looking for a pleasant change-of-pace novel should take a look at this one.

This is a delightful book!
The story starts with the President of France leaving his hat in a restaurant. The mystery unfolds as
one after another the hat takes on new and temporary owners, and how their lives seem to experience
important changes as a result of their wearing the hat. A fun book, it would make a great gift.
