Massive Fun for the Money
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
This is British GM Danny Gormally's first book, and it's pure entertainment! Danny takes 42 games (8 or 10 from the 60's, a bunch from the mid 90's, and 9 from the 21st century), and comments on them with a deft hand. The analysis is perfectly balanced, not too deep and not too shallow, with a LOT of commentary on each game. About half the commentary is about interesting anecdotal comments, speculation about moves and outstanding "verbal" analysis, and half is alternate lines, albeit short to make a point and not exhaustive. The comments and lines are all insightful and valuable, and will be entertaining and enlightening for any player at 1200 and above. This is not mind blowing Kasparov or Dvoretsky level detail, but the games chosen ARE very deep with lots of surprises and turns that leave an opponent with few choices. The chapters are:
1. Tal
2. More Tal
3. Shirov
4. Topalov
5. Morozevich
6. Anand
7. Fisher, Kasparov, Karpov, Carlsen (two gems)
8. Danny
The openings and defences included are:
Queen's Indian (2)
Modern Benoni Defense
Nimzo-Indian Defense
Kings Indian Defense (2)
French Defense (3)
Sicilian (11)
Ruy Lopez (2)
Semi Slav Defense (2)
Catalan
Evans Gambit (2)
Trompowsky Opening
Chiigorin Defense (2)
There are as many unexpected anecdotes and advice gems as there are unexpected moves! Gormally's tone is humble (for a 2500+ rated player), as he wishes out loud he'd gotten a chance to play Kasparov. There is a nice blend of analysis, then funny and insightful "human" side stories about stress, the clock, food, clothing, settings... then VERY good INSIGHTS about the importance and reasoning behind aggressive, risky and unexpected moves. Danny alternates between bitching (he calls them rants) about the lack of money in chess and the humorous addictions of web play. Although he tips his hat to Think Like a Grandmaster, this book is less about "easy formulas" and decision trees and more about seeing behind the curtain with outstanding insights about turning points in each game and what caused them.
At first read, just browsing over the games, the analysis doesn't seem all that incisive, heavy or deep. Then you start to read the written commentary. WOW! You now see that you could spend months on the insights in this book, because of the strategic and tactical commentary more than a bunch of possible or missed post mortem variations.
At $13 US, this is a real gem. The style is humorous, sweet and insightful, and above all, entertaining. At the end, even if you only skim the written parts, you get a "been there" feel for details you would have missed if you've never been to a high level tournament. Because of that, this will likely find a wide appeal at all levels of play. 5 Stars, very thoughtful and original ideas!

Calculate like a grandmaster
By Sidney Denmark
I gave this book a five star rating because it opens up a world of possibilities of what it takes to function like a grandmaster would. You first must have the vision of a grandmaster then you can see all of candidate moves in a given position thats calculating in the same way a grandmaster does. A grandmaster has tactical, positional, and straegical vision in each and every move that should be made over the board it all comes with the ability to calculate.
